TU Braunschweig Science&Art Lab Residency

A World Between the Size and Light
OPEN CALL
for Artist in residence at TU Braunschweig’s Science&Art Lab in cooperation with Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers.

SCIENCE&ART LAB
Science&Art Lab brings together cutting-edge research with art in their various forms of expression and media and inspires a dialog. The aim is to enable different approaches to research questions and an exchange between science, art and audiences.
Science&Art Lab is open to experiments, transfer thinking, new formats and ideas.
Our aim is to give space to the dialog between art and science and to fill this space with life, with talks, exhibitions, screenings and other opportunities for encounters.
We are convinced that this exchange will provide food for thought that is as well critical as enthusing, inspiring and community-building.

QUANTUM FRONTIERS
The Cluster of Excellence “QuantumFrontiers” is dedicated to the fundamentals of quantum and nanometrological phenomena in order to push the limits of what is measurable and achieve maximum precision through e.g. quantum technologies. QuantumFrontiers brings together around 400 researchers from TU Braunschweig, Leibniz University Hannover and the National Metrology Institute of Germany. The Cluster of Excellence builds on the experience on Braunschweig’s core research area Metrology.
As part of QuantumFrontiers, researchers at the Institute of Semiconductor Technology are working on miniaturizing lasers and LED technology and increasing their efficiency to create the enabling technologies for building quantum computers suitable for mass production. At the interface of physics and chemistry, they are pursuing for example the task of isolating individual molecules from the crystals, that are the basis for LEDs, and processing them in a targeted manner. Applied to semiconductor surfaces, these molecules are given an incredibly tiny yet crucial task: to emit individual light particles, photons. Another vision can be seen in LED grids, where tens of thousands of individually controllable microscopic LED light sources are brought together on just a few square millimeters. Such grids could, for example, make gas sensors small and energy-saving, form tiny displays or even become the hardware for new types of neural computers.

RESIDENCY
As one key aspect of Science&Art Lab we are realizing an international artist in residency program to connect partners who are interested in same or similar topics from different points of view. Against the background of quantum research, we invite
artists to apply with their own project. Convinced of the mutual inspiration of both fields, we look forward to ideas that can be linked to quantum topics in a variety of ways (see keywords).

In 2024 Science&Art Residency will be based at the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers and specifically at the Institute of Semiconductor Technology.
Scientists open their laboratories to the artist and grant access to their studies, working material and technical equipment.
The core of the residency is the exchange between the various fields of work and research and the process that results from this. It is therefore not necessarily about producing an artwork in the narrow sense.
In addition, meetings at National Metrology Institute and Leibniz University Hannover, who are part of the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers, can be organized.
