AlterWork Residency Program

This residency was designed to allow emerging contemporary artists time and space to create new work exploring their practice. Artists may submit a proposal of how they intend to utilize the space as a studio to create new work or a specific project. The residency will culminate in a solo closing reception that is promoted across our extensive network. Proposals should have a contemporary art focus showing experimentation and career reach for the artist. We are especially interested in projects that involve conceptual art, practice or theory or involve the public in their creative process.

Program Goals: To offer support and space to artists and encourage them to experiment and explore their concepts amongst a community of artists as they move their work forward in the contemporary art world

Eligibility: The residency is open to emerging artists from US or abroad

Details of Residency:

  • The period of residency is between 2 and 6 months;
  • Residencies are ongoing. Applications are reviewed quarterly with the following deadlines: March 31st, June 30th, September 30th, December 31st. Applicants are notified within 3 weeks after the deadlines.
  • Artists are provided the following:
    • Full access to a 1500 sq. ft. fully equipped studio,
    • Screen-Printing Facility, Photo Developing Dark Room (BW only), Ceramic facility with potters wheels and kilns (no firing fees), dirt room, library
    • Studios visits, opportunities for public programming and workshop leading, professional curation, gallery space, community of artists
    • facilitating accommodation and professional development during stay
  • Cost to the artist is $400 per month; $200 non-refundable administration fee
  • $200 deposit is required upon acceptance of residency in order to hold your space;
  • The residency space is work only (i.e., no live-in accommodation); We are located 10 minutes from Midtown Manhattan in Long Island City’s growing art community sharing the neighborhood with Kaufman Arts District, Flux Factory, Museum of the Moving Image, Socrates Sculpture Park, Isamu Noguchi Museum, Kaufman Astoria Studios, MoMA PS1, Chocolate Factory Theater, transportation and a vibrant community of shops, bars and restaurants.

  • Give preferred availability and a time frame between 2 and 6 months.

We will send confirmation of receipt within 48 hours. Proposals may take up to 3 weeks after deadline to be considered


ONLINE

This residency was designed to give emerging contemporary artists an online platform to create new work and explore their practice. Over the course of four weeks, artists will be encouraged to experiment and explore their concepts and move their work forward in the contemporary art world. 

Artists are asked to submit a proposal outlining how they wish to allocate their time as artist in residence. We are especially interested in projects that involve conceptual art, practice or theory or involve the public in their creative process. The residency will culminate in a solo show exhibited on alterworkstudios.com and promoted across our extensive network.

Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: The residency is open to emerging artists from US or abroad
  • We welcome artists working in all mediums with access to a computer and internet to apply
  • There is one available resident position each cycle, see dates listed below
  • Applications are reviewed and seats filled on a rolling basis 
  • Cost to the artist: $100 (paid via PayPal or Venmo before residency start date)
  • Artists will not have access to the studio’s physical space to work. Artists will be responsible for acquiring their own materials/tools/etc. 
  • Each resident is expected to treat the program like any other on-site residency, please be prepared to spend dedicated time each day on researching, creating, or thinking about your studio practice.

Artist Benefits:

  • Artists will be able to takeover the studio’s Instagram account (2500+ followers) to promote their work for one day.
  • Artists will be invited to participate in the studio’s FREE monthly critique group, AlterCrit, so that they can receive feedback on their work.
  • Weekly phone calls/zoom meetings with a member of the studio staff to discuss progress, goals, and potential obstacles.
  • During the final week of the residency, an exhibition of the AIR’s work will be featured on the studio’s website.
