Short Description

The Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion (Berlin) is awarding research grants for visual artists and curators to support their artistic and curatorial development. The funding aims to provide financial support for research, experimentation, and new project development in contemporary visual arts.

The grant can be combined with other funding (except the Berlin visual arts working grant and Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn grant)

Applicants must notify the Senate Department if they receive additional Berlin or Kunstfonds Bonn grants

The grant period cannot be postponed

Failure to meet requirements or missing documents will result in disqualification.

What the Grant Supports:

Artistic and curatorial research, including:

Research on specific topics

Development of new projects or working techniques

Completion of existing projects

Art documentation, education, or publications

 

Submission Requirements

Online submission only (applications by email/post not accepted)

Applications must be in German (project descriptions in other languages will be rejected)

Required Documents:

Completed online application form (including project description, max. 1,900 characters)

Artistic CV and Portfolio (max. 10 A4 pages, PDF, max. 10 MB)

Proof of identity and Berlin residency

GbR contract or declaration (for group applications)

 

Selection Process:

Jury evaluation: Applications are reviewed based on quality and eligibility

Formal review: Senate Department verifies selected applications

Lottery selection: Final recipients are chosen randomly from eligible applications

Results announced in July 2025

 

Eligibility

Open to professional artists, curators, and artist/curator groups based in Berlin

Must have completed artistic training or demonstrate several years of artistic/curatorial work

Groups must apply as a GbR (Gesellschaft bürgerlichen Rechts), with at least 50% of members residing in Berlin

Applicants must maintain Berlin residency throughout the application and funding period

Non-EU applicants must ensure their residence permit allows self-employment

Not eligible:

Students (including PhD students)

Professors (at the time of application or during the grant period)

Designers, screenwriters, directors, cinematographers (except media artists with a clear visual arts focus)

Applicants who already received a Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn grant for 2025

€8,000 (paid in four monthly installments of €2,000 from September to December 2025)
