The Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky, is honored to announce its tenth annual “Shining a Light” International Photography Contest and subsequent exhibition. This contest and exhibition will be informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and #5 (Gender Equality). This year the Ali Center is asking participants to submit photographs that illustrate the various ways women compete and the challenges they face in sports all over the world.
At the end of the contest period, the Muhammad Ali Center will produce a documentary-style exhibition featuring 30 selected photographs, beginning on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8, 2024.
CONTEST THEME
“Shining a Light: Women Athletes”
2020 marked a significant milestone for the Olympic Games with 49% of competing athletes being women. This progress came 120 years after women were admitted to compete in the 1900 Paris Olympics. However, despite the increasing representation of women in the sporting events, there remains a gender imbalance within the Olympic Committee as less than 20% of its members are women. Globally, women athletes continue to face discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, physical appearance, physical ability, personality, and various other factors. Additionally, women’s sports are notoriously underfunded, causing subpar playing conditions, insufficient equipment, and inequitable compensation.
Photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to submit photographs that illustrate the various ways in which women athletes compete or are discouraged from competing, internationally. This contest will accept photographs that illustrate the following themes:
- Disparities in women’s sporting facilities and equipment as they relate to men’s facilities and equipment
- Female athletes competing, professionally or recreationally, in a team setting or individually
- Gender inequities in sport based on sociopolitical climate
- The transformative impact of sports in empowering women and girls through physical fitness, health, agency, and community
EXHIBIT INTENTION
In the resulting documentary-style exhibition, the Muhammad Ali Center intends to increase awareness and to educate its visitors on inequality in sports, especially as they relate to women athletes globally. The objective is to inspire viewers to get involved and be a part of the solution and create change for a more just world.
