We are excited to announce our Open Call for Artists for the first edition of the international Privacytopia Festival. Privacytopia is a nomadic arts event, travelling to a new EU city each year. The inaugural edition will take place in Ghent, Belgium, in March 2024.
We are inviting creative individuals and/or collectives from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to submit their work for consideration to be showcased in our first edition of the Privacytopia Festival.
Submission Guidelines:
Theme/Concept:
A bridge between art and privacy…Privacytopia is an arts festival researching data-usage, data profiling and data monetisation and their implications on individuals and society. It is an initiative by Privacy Salon, a Brussels-based non-profit organisation looking at the social and ethical issues raised with introducing new technologies. The works exhibited at Privacytopia are touching on surveillance, AI, neurotechnology, transhumanism, robotics, deep fake, datafication, hacktivism, digital labour, et al.
Eligibility:
This call is open to professional emerging and established artists, from any geographical location.
Artists working in any medium, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, design, installation, performance, and more, are encouraged to apply as long as the project is already finished and ready for exhibition by the end of the submission period. Note: This call is open to all, but we prioritise including projects by artists from underrepresented communities
Submission Deadline:
Submissions must be received no later than September 8th 2023 (0:00 CET)
Late submissions will not be accepted.
Submission Format:
Please submit your application via info@privacytopia.org
In your submission, include the following:
- Artist Statement: A brief description of your artistic practice and the concepts behind your work (max. A4)
- A short portfolio of recent or thematically relevant work, not exceeding 5MB.
- For video or time-based media, provide accessible links (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). If possible, add a link to high-resolution images or links to your artwork samples.
- A short artist Biography/CV: A summary of your artistic background and exhibition history, if applicable. (max 2 x A4)
Selection Process:
Our selection committee is: Régine Debatty (Curator of Privacytopia 2024), Marleen Wynants (Founder & advisor of Crosstalks, VUB), Thierry Vandenbussche (Artistic Director of Privacytopia), will review all submissions carefully.
The decision of the selection committee is final and cannot be appealed.

Additional information: More details about the arts festival will be announced early October 2023.
Copyright and Usage:
By submitting your work and being accepted, you grant Privacytopia/ Privacy Salon the right to use images of your artwork for promotional purposes related to the event. The copyright of the artwork remains with the artist.
Costs and Fees:
An artist fee and transportation costs are covered. The organisation will draft a case-by-case proposal for the selected artist. Upon agreement the collaboration will be confirmed.
