Jan van Eyck Academie Residency

Artists and designers coming from all fields, architects, curators, writers and other artistic researchers, makers and critical thinkers, including duos and collectives, are invited to apply for an 11-month residency taking place in 2026 at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

We will be able to realise some positive changes for 2026: the stipend will be raised, and every individual participant, duo, collective or participant with a family will be provided with furnished housing.

Each selected participant receives the time and space to further their artistic practice with the expert support of our advisers, the curator/resident liaison, the departments of Nature Research and Education & Development, as well as the library and the labs – Photography & Audiovisual, Material Matters, Food, Printing & Publishing, and Future Materials. Participants not only work in their individual trajectories but also develop themselves in relation to their peers. During the residency, they share their stories and their practices. It is in the convergence of these worlds where one truly gets to understand and support one another, where new ideas sprout, and interdisciplinary collaborations begin. 

The Jan van Eyck is open to a wide array of disciplines and approaches, ranging from material-based to research-driven practices, addressing both urgent global issues and more personal inquiries. What the Jan van Eyck participants share is an inquisitive and considerate attitude toward the other and the world, their work testifies to an art practice that is investigative and committed.  

Participants can get actively involved in institutional (public) programmes where speculative concepts are tested and the pressing socio-environmental challenges of today are debated.  

The multi-disciplinary and intersectoral approach, the multiform organisation, and the diverse participant cohort form the plurality which lies at the core of the Jan van Eyck Academie. Every year, the Jan van Eyck commits to fostering a broad, diverse coalition of participants, advisers, and collaborative partners – a framework that embraces a diversity of practices and allows for a multitude of voices.

Benefits and support

• Lasting 11 months, the residency runs from 15 January until 15 December 2026; 
• 30 to 32 positions are selected through this general call. Next to individuals, duos, collectives as well as candidates with child(ren) are welcome to apply;
• Housing – newly built and furnished – is included in the 11-month residency. The Jan van Eyck guarantees each participant a private studio apartment. The participant is required to accept the accommodation on offer;
• Participants receive a monthly stipend of €1,500 of which the rental fee for accommodation, including service costs, is deducted. Please see our FAQ page for the financial overview; 
• Participants with child(ren) receive a monthly stipend of € 2,000 and a spacious private apartment which can accommodate the participant, their child(ren) and partner, if relevant. The rent, including service costs, is deducted from the stipend. If required, the Jan van Eyck applies for a visa on behalf of the whole family – the participant, child(ren), and the partner; 
• Each member of a duo receives a monthly stipend of €1,500 and a private studio apartment per person. The rent, including service costs, is deducted from the stipend; 
• A duo that is composed of life partners can share a private studio apartment and receives a combined monthly stipend of €2,500. The rent, including service costs, is deducted from the stipend; 
• Collectives receive a combined monthly stipend of €4,500 (a maximum of 3 monthly stipends) and will be housed in a maximum of 3 private studio apartments. (Collectives composed of more than 3 people, can be provided with accommodation on a rotation basis – exact details are arranged in mutual agreement between the collective and the JvE management). The rent, including service costs, is deducted from the stipend; 
• The provided accommodation can house the individual participant together with their life partner; however, the Jan van Eyck does not arrange any administrative matters on the partner’s behalf; 
• Participants receive an annual working budget of €2,000 to be spent on the realisation of their individual projects during the residency period; 
• If relevant, the Jan van Eyck applies for a visa on behalf of the participant;

Requirements

• The application fee amounts to €65 (excl. VAT) or €78,65 (incl. VAT); the application fee is waived for applicants from and living in the Least Developed Countries, Low Income Countries and Lower Middle Income Countries and Territories as mentioned on the DAC list of ODA recipients; 
• The enrolment fee amounts to €2,750 (excl. VAT); 
• Participants are expected to settle in Maastricht during their residency period; 
• The languages of communication at the academy are Dutch and English. It is important to master the English language sufficiently to be able to converse and collaborate with fellow participants and staff members; 
• Alumni of Rijksakademie or De Ateliers, two fellow Post-Academies in the Netherlands, are not eligible if they have been enrolled as full-time participants in the named institutions; 
• The Jan van Eyck Academie is formally not an educational institute. Consequently, the participant cannot earn any ECTS and the institute does not provide degrees or certificates;

Applying is done online. The candidate will be asked to fill out a form with personal information and then proceed by laying out their project idea in three steps – 1. artist statement, 2. motivation and 3. project proposal, followed by uploading a PDF file of documented work and a CV/resume.

Selection procedure

Your application will be assessed by a selection committee composed of the Jan van Eyck director and curator/resident liaison, as well as four other external art professionals coming from various fields of expertise. When reviewing applications, the jury pays attention to the following: 

• motivation for taking on a residency period at the Jan van Eyck at this point in the applicant’s artistic trajectory; 
• urgency, purpose, and the aim of the project proposal; 
• the applicant’s ability to exercise critical thought, their approach to (self)reflection, and the positioning of their practice in relation to others and to the world.  

The selection committee takes into consideration several factors in relation to the final selection, such as a balance in disciplines, geography, and gender.
