As part of the Sustainability by Design transfer project, Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany is offering two artist / designer in residence scholarships from 1 May 2024 – 31 October 2024 on the topics of bio-based materials and technology and sustainability.

The Sustainability by Design project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Joint Science Conference in the Innovative University funding line, will run from 1 January 2023 to the end of 2027 in the Design department. The aim of the project is to transfer knowledge from sustainability research to society and the economy through design.

The project is now looking for two people who would like to create a free work in this context, which will be shown at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven in October 2024. For the Biobased Materials residency, the organisers are looking for an artist or designer who would like to develop a new project that deals with biobased materials or sustainable production methods that use biological resources. For the Technology and Sustainability residency, they are looking for a person whose work will address the tension between technology and sustainability.

The scholarship holders will be provided with a private room in a flat shared with the other resident  for the duration of their stay and will each receive €1500/month to cover their living expenses.

  • scholarship amounting to €1500 per month to cover living expenses (= €9000 in total for the six month residency)
  • free accommodation for the duration of the residency programme (one private single room per resident in a furnished flat shared between the two residents)
  • €1500 material budget, more if necessary, according to reasoned need payment of travel costs to travel to and from Essen, in accordance with the state‘s travel expenses law

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Please submit one single PDF-file containing the following:
→ Curriculum vitae
→ Informative portfolio showing a selection of a maximum of ten works
→ Project proposal with text and images on no more than three A4 pages, addressing one of the two subject areas (“Bio-based
Materials” or “Technology and Sustainability”). The proposal should describe which questions your project seeks to address, which ways of working / methods you intend to use during the six months, and which outcomes you envision to exhibit at Dutch Design Week 2024. It should include a timetable with milestones.
Please submit your application by 15 February 2024 23:59 via email to sbyd@folkwang-uni.de. Please include either “Residency Bio-based Materials” or “Residency Technology and Sustainability” in the email subject line.
Interviews with the shortlisted applicants will take place via video call on 19 / 20 February 2024. Shortlisted applicants will be informed on 16 February 2024.
