Passage Art in Residence Program

For the two ‘Passage Shorts’ residencies in July 2024, the Kultur- und Kunstverein Kemberg e.V. and the Polygona Kunstverein e.V. – in cooperation with the Naturpark Dübener Heide, the Ferropolis Stiftung and the partners of the splash! and MELT music festivals – are looking forward to receiving applications from national and international artists from the fields of photography and film. The two ‘Passage Shorts’ residencies will take place during the music festivals

  • splash! (04-06 July 2024) and
  • MELT (11-13 July 2024)

One place is available per festival.

Under the theme ‘Status Landscape’, the residencies are intended to enable an examination of the current state of the landscape using the example of the Dübener Heide, a nature park in eastern Germany. The two ‘Passage Shorts’ residencies will take place in Ferropolis. Ferropolis is an industrial museum and event venue located on a peninsula in Lake Gremmin, which was created from the former Golpa-Nord open-cast mine after coal mining ended in the 1990s. Ferropolis is located in the immediate surroundings of the town of Gräfenhainichen in Saxony-Anhalt and is now the setting for major music festivals, among other activities. The two ‘Passage Shorts’ residencies are intended to enable artists to photographically document the contemporary use of the former open-cast mining area Golpa-Nord during the music festivals splash! and MELT on site in Ferropolis. We are looking for applications from artists who would like to:

  • explore new themes in the context of ‘Status Landschaft’ during ‘Passage Shorts’ residencies
  • who use the residency to continue long-term photographic projects on post-mining landscapes – here using the example of the Dübener Heide

The two ‘Passage Shorts’ residencies are part of KOBRA. The KOBRA (KOntinuitäten, BRüche, Ausblicke) project is part of the funding programme “Aller.Land – zusammen gestalten. Strukturen stärken.“ The programme is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb). The programme partner is the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs (BMI). Aller.Land is part of the Federal Rural Development and Regional Value Creation Programme (BULE plus). The funding includes:

  • ticket and photo pass for the respective festival splash! or MELT
  • travel expenses for travelling to and from the festival up to a maximum of 300,00 EUR
  • a one-off grant of 300,00 EUR

Proof of expenses is provided in the form of an invoice to be submitted by the artists to Polygona Kunstverein e.V. and includes all taxes and duties that may be payable by the artists. Polygona Kunstverein e.V. supports the artists on site in organisational and content-related matters. All other costs, e.g. for materials, are to be covered by the artists themselves.
