The Weltmuseum Wien , one of the three federal museums in the KHM Museum Association, houses one of the most important collections of tangible and intangible cultural heritage from societies and cultures around the world. Addressing current debates in a globalized world and critically addressing colonial legacies are among the museum’s core missions. Through its research and the transcultural communication of collection and exhibition content, the museum addresses a diverse audience.
The collection of African material culture and art, comprising approximately 40,000 objects, is one of the museum’s largest. Its focus is on the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, and Nigeria (including the Benin collection). The aim is to develop and profile its potential in the context of postcolonial discourses, and to make it accessible to a broad audience, both analogue and digitally.
These tasks await you:
- Curatorial supervision, digitization and development of a collection strategy for the African collections
- Collaboration on interdisciplinary exhibitions and the redesign of the permanent exhibition
- Scientific processing of collections and support for provenance research
- Development of cooperative research projects with national and international institutions with a focus on African partners
- Planning and participation in analogue and digital mediation and event formats in cooperation with the Cultural Education and Outreach Department
- Expansion of the existing network with African institutions, scientists, experts, artists and increased cooperation with local diasporic communities
- Representation of the collection at local, national and international levels
You meet these requirements:
- Completed university degree in a relevant subject (art or cultural history, social or cultural anthropology)
- Proven expertise in the material culture and art of Africa and the Diaspora with a focus on West, East or South Africa
- Several years of experience in the museum and exhibition sector, including experimental and participatory formats
- Knowledge of contemporary art from the Global South
- Experience in dealing with museum databases and object documentation
- International networking in the professional community
- Knowledge of German and English, any other foreign language, including French and an African language, is an advantage
- Experience in acquiring funding
- Personality with a strong talent for building networks and maintaining long-term relationships
- High communication and organizational skills as well as a structured way of working

- Classification according to the KHM collective agreement: Salary scheme A, salary group 1a/salary level 1 = € 3,651.30 gross (14 times annually), the final classification depends on the crediting of previous service according to the collective agreement of the KHM Museum Association
