Short Description:
The Unpack Studio semi-programmed residency in Vedado, Havana, Cuba is open to visual artists, curators, performers, writers and researchers. The resident can research, create new work individually or in collaboration, interact and network with contemporary Cuban practitioners, Cuban art students, performers, galleries, curators and, of course, explore Havana.
We focus on providing intellectual and critical support and organizing access to Cuban institutions such as art centres, galleries and universities. Unpack Studio works with curators with international recognition: we are currently working with Dannys Montes de Oca, one of the curators of the Havana Biennial. A Daily Coordinator is also present to help the artists to implement their projects and negotiate Havana, an exciting but challenging city.
We provide the opportunity to network and collaborate with local artists, theoreticians and curators. What is important to our organization is that this in turn opens doors for Cuban artists to learn about other practices through artist talks and presentations and may create the possibility for them to promote their work internationally. This spirit of exchange is one of the core values of the residency as well as diversity and inclusiveness.
Duration of residency
Flexible residencies from 2 to 7 weeks. Last minute residencies for 2025 possible.
The artist is expected to present their work to the staff of Unpack Studio along with any other residents present. A further artist talk and presentation of work open to the general public may be possible.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Unpack Studio Havana Art Residency provides private and shared worked spaces (table, chairs, wall space) and a meeting place. Because of Cuba’s economic climate, artists must bring all the art supplies they need. Specific facilities, for example, a printmaking studio, a photography darkroom, a sculpting studio, can be organized for a fee through our network of artists and art institutions in Havana.
Studio / Workspace
The residency has multiple work spaces. The residents may work privately in their room or use one of several shared spaces inside and outside. There is a shared “dirty” studio.
Entry Fee:
USD $350 per week. Partners and family are welcome for a fee. Please contact us for details. Unpack Studio can provide a support letter if the resident choose to seek external funding from their home country. There is no local Cuban funding. All of the residency fees go towards paying staff and utilities. The artist must also account for the cost of daily living.
