The Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency (LAP) at Montalvo opened in 2004 as a new facility, designed especially for artists, consisting of ten unique live/work studios designed to accommodate many artistic practices including music, visual, literary and performing arts. The facility has a commons building that provides a flexible space where artists can gather for meals prepared by our culinary artist/chef, collaboration and social events. Lucas Artists Fellows can access and utilize Montalvo’s many buildings and grounds, including a workshop for woodworking and an adjacent ceramics studio.
Since its inception, Lucas Artists Fellows have been selected through a two-tiered nomination and juried process. Only once before have we offered an open application and it was also specifically for California-based artists. As we approach our 20th anniversary, we are excited to open our doors again to California artists of all disciplines. We will award fellowships to sixty emerging, mid-career and established artists and creatives working in the fields of visual arts (including media such as drawing, painting, sculpture, film, photography, architecture, design and social practice), literary arts (fiction, non-fiction, playwriting, poetry), music and composition (including experimental practices), and performing arts (dance, theater, performance art). Fellows will receive three months of residency time which can be used at their discretion over a three-year period.
The LAP is dedicated to providing artists with a flexible and expansive space in which to create, encouraging the creative process, risk-taking, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary investigation of contemporary themes. The LAP is a hybrid model that supports uninterrupted time to develop new work, while offering opportunities to share ideas and projects through public programming and partnerships. We value diversity, equity, access, and inclusion, and are committed to supporting a broad mix of artistic voices, fostering a shared sense of community and belonging. We strive to produce innovative programming that connects LAP artists with the Bay Area and beyond.
We will accept proposals until 5pm Pacific time on March 17, 2023. Fellows will be selected by professional juries for each discipline and awards will be announced by mid- to late April, 2023. We look forward to learning more about you and your work!
