Curatorial Research Program, an initiative supported by Allen & Overy Shearman
Department: Artistic
Reporting to: Curator, Collection Manager
One-year fixed-term contract – full time
Start date: April 2025
Mudam, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Luxembourg, is looking for a Curatorial Research Fellow, an initiative supported by Allen & Overy Shearman.
Inaugurated in 2006, in a building designed by the internationally renowned architect Ieoh Minh Pei, Mudam is Luxembourg’s museum of contemporary art. Our mission is to collect, conserve and present the most relevant contemporary art of our time and to make it accessible to a wide audience. We aim to be a leading player in the promotion and understanding of contemporary art through our exhibitions, publications and artistic and educational programmes.
Located in Europe in the heart of a cosmopolitan country where no fewer than 179 nationalities coexist, we wish to address all communities and promote their access to contemporary art. It is important to us to make the museum a place of life and dialogue where the issues of our contemporary society can be addressed and debated. We are committed to a more inclusive, tolerant and responsible world where museums play a privileged role in transmitting heritage to future generations.
Your mission
Your role, within the collection department and more broadly within the curatorial team, will be to actively contribute to the development of the collection through the partnership established between Mudam Luxembourg and the international law firm Allen & Overy Shearman. You will conduct research in the field of contemporary art with a particular focus on moving images and new technologies. You will contribute to discussions and develop acquisition proposals. You may also work on developing presentations of the collection.
Begun in 2013, the partnership between Mudam and Allen & Overy resulted in the donation to the museum of a set of works focused on the question of the moving image. Since 2019, this collaboration has been strengthened thanks to increased support for acquisitions and the creation of a curatorial research grant. The latter aims in particular to extend the scope of research to contemporary artists whose work revolves around the moving image and new technologies.
Your role will include:
Research and acquisition proposals
- Conduct research and develop acquisition proposals by contributing to the identification of a work to be acquired with the support of Allen & Overy Shearman in 2026
- Conduct research on the works in the collection around questions relating to the moving image and new technologies: place the works in the history of the medium, identify current issues, build up a critical archive on these questions
- Identify leading artists and emerging artists whose work is linked to moving images and new technologies
- Produce detailed files on artists including biographies, bibliographies and any relevant documentation
- Liaise with galleries and artists in consultation with the Curator, Collection Manager and Head of Art Department
- Provide administrative support to the acquisition process and contribute to acquisition-related meetings and collection presentation as required.
- Contribute to the museum’s collection database and digital and physical archives
- Contribute to the museum’s research regarding the conservation of works of art integrating moving images and new technologies.
- Support the development work of the Mudam team, attend key meetings, deliver presentations and prepare various documents for Allen & Overy Shearman
Diffusion and visibility
- Identify and develop new ways of promoting works in the collection linked to moving images and new technologies
- Contribute to all aspects of the development, planning and execution of collection presentations relating to the moving image and new technologies.
- Contribute to the development of texts on works related to the moving image and new technologies in the collection, including acquisition proposals, labels, educational texts and documents intended for the press and marketing
- Contribute to the production of scientific texts relating to moving images and new technologies for Mudam publications by proofreading and verifying elements
- Help promote the Mudam collection to the public by liaising with the museum’s communications team
- Present works donated by Allen & Overy Shearman to the public during guided tours of the collection if necessary
General
- Represent Mudam with partners and at external meetings if necessary
- Contribute to the strategic development of the collection and work as a team to ensure that the department’s missions are fulfilled
