Organizer Information

The National Academy of Design is one of the oldest artist-led institutions in the United States, dedicated to promoting the fine arts through education, exhibitions, and professional support. Founded in 1825, the Academy has long played a critical role in shaping American artistic discourse, particularly through its network of elected members known as National Academicians—artists and architects recognized for their contributions to the field.

The Abbey Mural Prize was established in 1932 through a bequest honoring Edwin Austin Abbey, an influential figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century American art. Since 1940, the Academy has awarded mural grants supporting artists and organizations engaged in public art practices that contribute to civic life. The program reflects a sustained institutional commitment to public murals as vehicles for storytelling, cultural expression, and social engagement.

Title & Description

Abbey Mural Prize 2026

The Abbey Mural Prize is a prestigious grant program supporting the creation, restoration, and reimagination of public murals across the United States and its territories. The initiative is grounded in the belief that murals serve as powerful tools for community engagement, social activism, and urban revitalization.

Selected projects will receive funding to produce or restore murals on public buildings or properties owned by charitable institutions. While traditional mural formats such as painting and mosaic are eligible, the prize actively encourages expanded and experimental interpretations of mural-making, including interdisciplinary, site-responsive, and socially engaged practices.

Projects are evaluated by a jury of National Academicians, ensuring a high level of artistic and architectural rigor. Emphasis is placed on conceptual strength, feasibility, and meaningful connection to local communities.
