Artist Commons is an international online artist development platform and virtual campus. Designed to bridge the gap between studio practice and professional career sustainability, Artist Commons pairs early- and mid-career visual artists with working mentors, curators, and peers for structured critique, art history theory, and practical art business education.

CALL FOR APPLICANTS: Artist Commons 2027 Cohorts (January Start) — Year-Long Online Incubator

Artist Commons has officially opened applications for its January 2027 Start Cohorts. Running from January 17 through December 18, 2027, the year-long program is structured into four 10-week quarters totaling 150–200 contact hours. Visual artists are placed into small, balanced cohorts of approximately 10 members and paired with a mentor. Members meet weekly for 2-hour interactive critique sessions, supplemented by twice-weekly lectures, panels, and writing clinics focusing on the business of art, modern art theory, grant/residency applications, gallery contracts, editioning, and strategic outreach.

Program Calendar & Quarter Breaks (2027)

The year-long program runs across four 10-week quarters with built-in breaks:

  • Quarter 1 (Q1): January 17 – March 27, 2027 (Post-Q1 Break: Mar 28 – Apr 10)
  • Quarter 2 (Q2): April 11 – June 19, 2027 (Post-Q2 Break: Jun 20 – Jul 4)
  • Quarter 3 (Q3): July 5 – August 8 & August 23 – September 26, 2027 (Mid-Q3 Break: Aug 9 – 22; Post-Q3 Break: Sep 27 – Oct 9)
  • Quarter 4 (Q4): October 10 – December 18, 2027 (Thanksgiving Break: Nov 25 – 27; Year-End Break: Dec 19 – Jan 15, 2028)

Program Benefits & Time Commitment

  • Weekly Time Commitment: Expect to spend 5–6 hours per week engaging with class material.
  • Cohort Feedback & Mentorship: Mandatory weekly 2-hour live Cohort Feedback Sessions with a 10-person cohort, plus 4 quarterly 1-on-1 crits with an assigned mentor.
  • Lectures & Webinars: ~90-minute lectures/panels held Tuesdays and Thursdays (typically starting around 1:00 PM Eastern Time), with replays and transcripts provided asynchronously.
  • Portfolio & Writing Clinics: Structured portfolio reviews, close-looking exercises, reading group discussions, and writing clinics for artist statements, bios, proposals, and open call applications.
  • Community App & Resources: Access to a custom smartphone app and private community space for ongoing feedback, lecture replays, curated grant/residency opportunity lists, and occasional optional in-person meetups in select cities.

Eligibility

  • Demographic Scope: Open unconditionally to early- and mid-career visual artists worldwide across all visual disciplines.
  • Academic Background: Open to all creators regardless of whether they hold a formal BFA/MFA art degree.
  • Selection Criteria: Assessed on commitment to studio practice, collaborative community spirit, and openness to giving and receiving critical feedback.

Tuition, Deposit & Partial Scholarships

  • Application Fee:100% Free to apply ($0 submission fee).
  • Tuition:$2,600 USD total for the full year (plus applicable tax).
  • Payment Schedule: Billed as an initial $1,400 USD deposit to secure your seat (refundable until Day 1 of Q1, minus a $100 admin fee), followed by 10 monthly installments of $120 USD.
  • Partial Scholarships: Need-based partial scholarships ranging from $300 to $1,200 USD are available to help cover the deposit. Applicants can apply directly via the scholarship section on the last page of the application form (recipients remain responsible for any remaining deposit balance and the 10 monthly installments).

Key Dates & Admission Deadlines

Admissions applications are processed on a rolling basis, with decisions emailed approximately two weeks prior to the quarter start (cohorts may fill early):

Location

All weekly cohort feedback meetings, mentor crits, lectures, and community discussions take place Online via video calls and the custom community app (with occasional optional in-person meetups in select regional cities).
