Brief Description

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is accepting applications for its 2025 Performing Artist in Residence program. The residency offers a unique opportunity for a live performance artist to create and showcase work inspired by the Garden and its 2025 theme: “Natural Connection.” The selected artist will have access to BBG’s resources and be required to engage the public through workshops and events before presenting a final performance in September 2025.

  • Final Presentation Dates: September 21 & 22, 2025

Eligibility

  • Open to live performance artists (choreographers, dancers, musicians, playwrights, theater makers, etc.)
  • Applicants must reside in New York City (no housing or transportation provided)
  • Must adhere to Garden rules and respect plant life
  • Open to all eligible applicants (Brooklyn Botanic Garden encourages diversity)

Theme

“Natural Connection” explores the dynamic relationship between humans and nature, the impact of human actions on the environment, and how nature influences human life, emotions, and ideas. The residency encourages artists to challenge audiences to reflect on their role in this cycle.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Portfolio (3–5 pieces of work)
  2. Resume
  3. Written Proposal including:
    • Performance ideas related to the 2025 theme
    • Public engagement plans (seminars, workshops, or classes)
    • Artist’s interest in botanic subject matter
    • Anticipated needs (supplies, space, equipment, budget)
  4. Artist Statement

Selection Process

  • Reviewed by a committee of BBG staff and previous artists in residence
  • Selection criteria:
    • Integration of the theme into the performance
    • Alignment with BBG’s mission and community values
    • Feasibility of performance in an outdoor space
    • Strength of public engagement proposals
    • Relationship with or interest in botanical themes
    • Strength of portfolio and past work
  • Final interview with the top 3 candidates before selection

  • Stipend: $8,000
