Short Description:
Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design (the Centre) is seeking passionate and dynamic individuals with strong project management skills to participate in Elevate: The Emerging Curators Program. This program offers a unique opportunity for Emerging Curators from equity-seeking communities to work with an experienced Mentoring Curator to develop and present an exhibition at the Centre as part of our Exhibition Series Future Proofing a World of Care.
Elevate: The Emerging Curators Program provides individuals interested in developing their creative aptitudes with practical, hands-on experience at a leading community cultural organization. The goal of this program is to build curatorial skills capacity among equity-seeking communities in Unama’ki Cape Breton Island while supporting artistic development for local artists. The successful candidates will play a pivotal role in transforming curatorial practices, promoting equity and justice, and amplifying a variety of artistic voices Elevate: The Emerging Curators Program is a paid short-term contract position. The Emerging Curators will be responsible for interpreting the themes of the exhibition series and recruiting artists whose works speak to these themes. A focus on artists based in Unama’ki Cape Breton is strongly preferred. Each Emerging Curator will have a term of four (4) months to organize and deliver three (3) thematic group exhibitions.
Emerging Curators will have access to an exhibition budget that will be managed with the support of the Mentoring Curator and General Manager. Additional staff support for planning, marketing, and educational programming is provided.
The Emerging Curator and Mentoring Curator will work together to coordinate expansive education and engagement programming that enhances visitor experiences. This public programming will promote social interaction, creative exchange, and audience engagement.
Elevate: The Emerging Curators Program is designed to support exhibitions presenting a broad spectrum of ideas and curatorial approaches, and to enhance Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design’s exhibition experience by developing educational initiatives, public programming, and opportunities for community engagement.
This is a remote/hybrid position and it is expected that the successful candidate will be able to work at Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design when necessary.
