Short Description:
The application for The Umbrella Arts Center’s 2025-2026 Artist-in-Residence program is now
open! Join an active and vibrant multidisciplinary art center with 50 artist studios, an
independent ceramics studio and classroom, a fully equipped woodshop, and gallery and
performance spaces in the historic center of Concord, MA.
Residency Dates: September 15 2025- August 31, 2026

Decision announcement: On or around June 8th, 2025
Our Artist in Residence (AiR) program primarily offers a studio space with exhibition and
teaching opportunities available. Applicants must be within the first five years of completing an
MFA or equivalent program, and may work in any medium including painting, sculpture,
installation, photography, textiles, digital media, film, mixed media, and interdisciplinary or
public art.
All applications will be reviewed by a jury of The Umbrella’s staff and resident artists. Select
applicants will be invited to a virtual interview with the Screening Committee and Visual Arts
Manager. These interviews will take place between May 26th-May 30th.
The selected AiR will be notified on or around June 8th, 2025
Residency Requirements:
We are looking for artists interested in active engagement with our studio arts community, in
Concord and beyond. As part of the residency program, the AiR is expected to:
- Make regular, active, and productive use of the studio space (minimum of 20 hours per
week) for the length of the residency - Present at least one Artist Talk, and any additional public program of any format with
the goal of engaging The Umbrella community in your work - Participate in The Umbrella’s Winter Market (Dec 5-7, 2025) and Open Studios (May 2-3,
2026) - Make efforts to attend monthly Artist Meetings and other formal and informal artist
events throughout the year. - Maintain communication with Umbrella staff and participation of program evaluations
- Interest and experience in teaching is a plus

The application will require the following materials:
- Artist statement (500 words maximum)
- Please elaborate on any existing project or a project you’d like to develop
during your residency, if applicable - Artist resume or CV with contact information
- Artist portfolio
- Please include 10-20 high resolution images of work that you have created
- within the past 2 years
- Please include the title, dimensions, medium, and date of all works
- List of 3 references
- Please include at least one reference from a member of the faculty of your MFA
program
Eligibility:
The Umbrella is particularly interested in artists who will:
- Use their residency as an opportunity to explore, experiment with, and elevate
contemporary art practices and conversations - Foster internal and external interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships
- Engage our local and broader community in The Umbrella’s mission to promote
creativity, learning, personal growth, and cultural exchange through accessible arts
programming - Provide opportunities and points of departure for panel discussions or experiential
exchanges with colleagues doing related work
Program Benefits or Awards:
Free access to a studio space of approximately 220 square feet with a large south facing
window, hardwood floors, tall ceilings, and thermostat-controlled heat and air
conditioning
- Opportunity to be involved in the activities and culture of multi-disciplinary art center,
including access to an independent ceramics studio - Opportunity to teach a class or workshop
- Opportunity to exhibit in The Umbrella’s Wedge Gallery, front lawn, and/or alternate
site in Concord for site-specific work
