Director of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel
Short Description
The Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel is seeking a Director for the Kunsthalle zu Kiel, a major cultural institution in Schleswig-Holstein. The museum is currently undergoing a five-year renovation, and the director will lead this transition while developing an engaging program during the closure and preparing for reopening.
Selection Process

Interview & Evaluation: Candidates may be required to complete an assessment
Responsibilities
Develop a strategic museum concept during the renovation phase and for reopening
Oversee a €50M renovation project as the museum’s user representative
Curate exhibitions and educational programs with a focus on diversity and public engagement
Expand the museum’s network with artists, institutions, and collectors
Manage collections, acquisitions, and funding initiatives
Serve on the board of the Kunsthalle zu Kiel e.V. and act as Managing Director of the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Kunstverein e.V.
Eligibility
Academic degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in art history, art sciences, or a related field
Strong curatorial, management, and leadership experience in museums or art institutions
Proven ability in exhibition planning, collection management, and budgeting
Experience in cultural networking (regional, national, international)
Knowledge of change management and major construction projects is a plus
Fluency in English (C1 level); proficiency in another modern language is desirable
Experience in securing third-party funding.
