FAKI (International Festival of Alternative Theatrical Expression) is a program of the Autonomous Cultural Centre Attack, realized at AKC Medika in Zagreb. AKC has operated since 1997 as a non-partisan, non-profit association supporting Croatia's independent cultural scene through festivals, alternative concerts, film and theater production, and educational programming, and has run the AKC Medika socio-cultural centre — housed in a former factory building — since 2009. As stated in the source, FAKI itself was created in 1998 as a response to elitism and the commercialization of the institutional cultural environment, whose political and artistic one-sidedness was seen as a handicap to independent, avant-garde, subversive, and experimental theater and performance work. The festival's stated selection criteria center on avant-garde performance research, innovative approaches, the political and personal self-awareness of authors, and the humanity of ideas and messages.

FAKI — 30th International Festival of Alternative Theatrical Expression, 2027 — Theme: Celebration
FAKI is calling for artists, activists, researchers, and theatre critics to take part in its 30th edition, taking place in Zagreb, Croatia, from May 24 to 30, 2027. Marking thirty years of both the festival and the organization behind it, this edition centers on the theme of Celebration — approached not only as a subject but as a method of making, sharing, and experiencing art together. The call invites contemporary performing arts practitioners from all disciplines to bring works that question, reinvent, complicate, embody, or make space for celebration, framed against a backdrop of ongoing crises, inequality, and political violence, and asking whether celebration can function as an act of resistance, resilience, or care rather than only triumph.

Celebration — explored as both subject matter and artistic method, encompassing questions of what deserves celebration today, whether celebration can be political or an act of resistance, and how performance and celebration relate as forms that exist only in the present moment.

Program Benefits & Awards
- Travel costs: up to €200 for individuals
