Description:
Incinerator Gallery and Moonee Valley City Council are inviting expressions of interest from First Nations artists to create a playable public art sculpture. The artwork will be temporarily installed at the Incinerator Gallery during a major exhibition in mid-2025 before being permanently relocated to the Maribyrnong River in Aberfeldie, Victoria, on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. The project acknowledges the river’s cultural, historical, and environmental significance while addressing the impacts of the 2022 flood on the local community, emphasizing themes of renewal, play, childhood, and intergenerational connection.
Eligibility:
- Open to First Nations artists, collectives, or representatives.
- Prior experience in public art is desirable but not mandatory.
- Applicants must engage in community consultation sessions in person.
Theme:
- Celebrate the Maribyrnong River’s cultural and environmental importance.
- Explore themes of childhood, play, renewal, and community togetherness.

- Include:
- Artist portfolio (3–5 projects, 10 images in PDF, media kit link).
- CV (up to 3 pages in PDF).
- Written statement (max 600 words) on connection to place, initial approach, and materiality.
Submission Requirements:
- Respond to mandatory questions regarding public art experience and fabricator relationships.
- No visual concepts are required at Stage 1.
Selection Process:
- Stage 1: Eligibility check and assessment by a First Nations Selection Panel.
- Shortlist of three artists will be invited to Stage 2.
- Stage 2: Shortlisted artists receive $2,500 to develop concept proposals, including drawings, a budget, and project partners.
- Artists present to the panel in a 45-minute interview.
- One artist is selected, publicly announced, and contracted.
Timeline:
- EOI Opens: 23 December 2024 (9:00 AM AEDT).
- EOI Closes: 2 February 2025 (11:00 PM AEDT).
- Shortlist Announcement: Early February 2025.
- Interviews: 14 March 2025.
- Successful Artist Announced: 18 March 2025.
- Temporary Installation: July–August 2025.
- Permanent Installation: February 2026.
Budget and Benefits:
- Artist fee: $15,000 (inclusive of superannuation).
- Production fee: $85,000 (for fabrication, materials, subcontractors).
- Total budget: $100,000 (plus GST).
