Organizer Information
Futurefarmers is an international collective of artists, designers, architects, writers, farmers, and anthropologists founded in San Francisco in 1995 by artist Amy Franceschini, and working in Gent, Belgium since 2003. The group forms collaborative constellations based on the context in which they work, exploring themes such as food systems, public transportation, and education through a process-led, hands-on approach. Futurefarmers' work has been featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and exhibited at institutions including the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the collective has published books including A Variation on Powers of Ten (2012) and For Want of a Nail (2019). Since 1997, the Futurefarmers studio has hosted the Artist in Residence (AIR) program described here, welcoming more than 25 artists from 13 countries to date.

Futurefarmers Artist in Residence Program
The Futurefarmers AIR program provides opportunities for young artists, designers, writers, and architects to work together in the collaborative environment of the Futurefarmers studio in San Francisco. Since 1997, the program has hosted more than 25 artists from 13 countries. Residents develop their own personal projects and also work on Futurefarmers projects during their residency, and the program has formed the basis for many ongoing collaborations, with many former residents continuing to work with Futurefarmers as partners after their residency ends. Residents are encouraged, but not required, to maintain a balance between personal work and collaborative work with Futurefarmers while in the program; the studio works together with residents to provide a supportive environment for research and exploration.

Eligibility
- Open to young artists, designers, writers, and architects
- Residents selected based on merit through an open application and upon invitation
- A work visa is required for residents who wish to work on paid projects for income
Program Benefits & Awards
- Partially sponsored, live-out residency (sponsorship based on financial need and Futurefarmers' current financial standing)
- Stipend of $500/month has been granted in the past (not guaranteed; dependent on Futurefarmers' financial well-being)
- Opportunity to work on paid projects for additional income (requires a work visa)
- Collaborative environment and supportive research/exploration space at the Futurefarmers studio
- Potential for ongoing collaboration with Futurefarmers beyond the residency period

Applicants must send a statement of interest in working with Futurefarmers (including how the residency will affect their work and how their work aligns with Futurefarmers), a list of artistic, computer, or other valuable skills, skills they wish to acquire or develop during the residency, a resume/CV, a description of any projects they would like to realize during the residency, past projects relevant to the residency, URLs, and "dreams, childhood memories…"
