Short Description:
The General Idea Fellowship at the National Gallery of Canada supports advanced research in contemporary art. The fellowship encourages research on various aspects of contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, printmaking, artist’s books, and multiples. The research must make use of the National Gallery of Canada’s collections, including the Art Metropole Collection, General Idea fonds, and AA Bronson collection.

Theme
Research should focus on contemporary art and may explore themes such as the intersections of art and sexuality, museum collections, and the influence of historical events on art movements.

Submission Requirements
A complete application must include:
Research proposal (max. 3 pages) outlining:
Aims, methodology, anticipated results
Summary of required research materials (bibliography, access to collections)
Proposed residency dates and timeline
Projected budget, including expenses and stipend
Curriculum vitae detailing education, employment history, awards, publications, and exhibitions
Details of other grants/funding applied for
One letter of recommendation, sent separately by the referee
Examples of finished work, in textual or visual format
Selection Process
A review committee (comprising National Gallery staff and external jurors) will evaluate applications based on:
Significance, originality, and feasibility of the proposal
Relevance of the National Gallery collections to the research
Potential for public engagement (physical, print, or digital)
Priority for projects with broader research impact
