Organizer Information

The Hakoniemi residence was founded in 2019 by the Hakoniemi Residence Support Association in Oravisalo, Rääkkylä, located within the North Karelia region of Finland. The site holds a rich artistic heritage; for 16 years, it was the home and studio of the celebrated Finnish painter Jorma Pajarinen. The organization is dedicated to reviving the local culture, music, and design of the Rääkkylä region. By hosting international and local creators, the association fosters cooperation between visiting artists and the local community, emphasizing sustainable work plans and a deep respect for the natural environment of the Northern Saimaa archipelago.

Title & Description

Hakoniemi Artist Residency: Sustainable Creativity in the Saimaa Archipelago
Hakoniemi offers a peaceful, self-directed working environment designed for creators seeking inspiration from nature. Situated on the shores of Lake Saimaa, the residency provides a space for reflection, research, and production. The program encourages "sustainable work plans"—projects that consider environmental impact or engage with the unique history and ecology of the region, such as the nearby Salpapolku military history trail or the endangered Saimaa ringed seal. The residency is best suited for those who thrive in remote, quiet settings and are comfortable managing their own daily schedules and artistic processes.
