Short Description
Both and. Neither nor. Containing multitudes and expanding the in-between.
Too often, we’re told to stay in our lane—stick to one thing, one practice, one expression. But that kind of binary thinking doesn’t just limit art and artists; it erases those who live outside the binary.
The in-betweeners, the hyphenated identities, the Third Culture Kids, the witches, the QTBIPOCs. With this residency we want to celebrate you! Call in the fam, the youngings and the elders and maybe even a Nordic cousin or two, and conjure the powers of a thousand ancestors while resting, playing, researching, living and frolicking.
We welcome anti-disciplinary, cross-disciplinary, i-don’t-know-what-it-is-disciplinary artists, researchers, curators, dj’s, chefs, illustrators, what-you-have-it, and everyone in between. You may apply to explore new potentials in work, ideas or collaborations that you are already busy with, or with something new, that you have not yet tested and that is in need of a black box.
We especially encourage artists that didn’t attend the ‘established’ schools of art, or who may be struggling with getting access, funding and structural support to apply.
CURATION
HAUT is curating this open call in collaboration with the artistic director of Diasporic Dimensions, Phyllis Akinyi, whose work focuses on centering diasporic voices. Therefore, this open call is a loving invitation to artists who exist and create in the ‘in-between’.
CO-CURATOR
Phyllis Akinyi is a Danish-Kenyan dancer, choreographer and researcher, whose work explores Africanist Spirituality within Flamenco, as well as a continuous investigation of the ‘betwixt and between’ – researching entanglements of movement, culture, and identity, from an anthropological lens of bodies ‘caught’ in cultural ‘in-betweens’. She is the artistic director of Diasporic Dimensions, a performing arts company centering diasporic experiences and complexities.
Eligibility
With this open call, HAUT, in collaboration with Phyllis Akinyi, invites artists, researchers, curators, DJs, chefs, illustrators – and everyone in between – to explore and experiment with what exists beyond fixed categories. We especially encourage those outside ‘established’ art schools or facing barriers to access, funding, and support to apply.
