Organizer Information
The Head On Photo Awards are presented by the Head On Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting photographers, promoting photographic excellence, and making photography accessible to diverse audiences worldwide. Established in 2008, the foundation organizes the annual Head On Photo Festival, one of Australia’s leading international photography festivals, providing platforms for photographers at all stages of their careers to exhibit, connect, and gain professional recognition.
Since its establishment, the Head On Photo Awards have become an internationally recognized photography competition, supporting emerging and established photographers through exhibitions, publications, and significant prize opportunities. The awards focus on recognizing powerful photographic storytelling, technical skill, originality, and meaningful engagement with subjects. More than $930,000 in cash and prizes has been awarded through the program since its creation.
The competition is designed around anonymous judging, meaning artists’ names and professional backgrounds are removed during the selection process. This approach ensures that submitted works are evaluated primarily on their artistic quality, creativity, and impact rather than reputation or career status.
Title & Description
Head On Photo Awards 2026
The Head On Photo Awards 2026 invite photographers from around the world to submit their strongest photographic works for consideration in one of three categories: Portrait, Landscape, and Exposure. The awards celebrate photography as a medium for storytelling, documentation, artistic expression, and exploration of contemporary issues.
The competition welcomes photographs created using photographic devices, including digital cameras and mobile devices, with both colour and black-and-white works accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit images that demonstrate strong conceptual thinking, technical quality, and the ability to engage viewers through compelling visual narratives.
The Exposure category provides an open platform for diverse photographic practices, including genres such as photojournalism, street photography, architecture, fashion, fine art, wildlife, sport, and travel photography. The Portrait category explores representations of individuals, groups, and self-portraiture, while the Landscape category embraces natural, urban, and industrial environments.
Selected finalists will have their works presented through the Head On Photo Festival 2026, including professional exhibitions in print and online formats, offering photographers international visibility and opportunities for career development.
