Hošek Contemporary is a gallery, performance space, and artist residency, founded in 2016 and located on the historical boat MS Heimatland in Berlin-Mitte. The institution specializes in performing arts, site-specific installations, and experimental sound or multimedia work, and regularly hosts exhibitions, performances, and residencies on board the barge.

Title & Description

Hošek Contemporary Prize 2026
An annual open call awarding three artists/ensembles with the opportunity to realize a new, site-specific exhibition or performance at Hošek Contemporary. The call invites proposals for fresh, original works (not traveling exhibitions or repeats), to be realized aboard the gallery boat between March and November 2026. Winners get both a cash award and access to the venue’s exhibition and performance spaces for a full production.

Eligibility

  • Open internationally / no geographic or nationality restriction.
  • There is no stated restriction on age, gender, or career stage. The call seems open to any artist or group able to realize the proposed project.

Program Benefits & Awards

  • 1st Prize: €1,700 + up to 3 weeks of exhibition or performance at Hošek Contemporary.
  • 2nd Prize: €1,500 + up to 2 weeks of exhibition or performance.
  • 3rd Prize: €1,300 + up to 1 week of exhibition or performance.
  • Opportunity to use the gallery’s 150 m² exhibition space OR its 100 m² performance space (capacity ~70 seated for performance; the performance space is suitable for dance, theatre, music).
  • Realization of a new body of work/premiere in a unique, historically and spatially distinctive setting (a barge on the river in central Berlin).

Application Requirements

  • A proposal for a site-specific exhibition or performance, with visualizations. (The website provides images of the space for download to help visualize placement.)
  • A short artist statement and CV.
  • A budget, if the project’s costs exceed the prize amount; in that case, proof of external funding must be included.
  • Preferred dates for exhibition or performance between March–November 2026.

Importantly: the work must be a new creation — no traveling exhibitions, no previously presented performances.

  • The gallery/space is unique: a ship converted into an exhibition/performance venue, which means unusual acoustics, spatial constraints/opportunities, and a distinctive atmosphere.

  • If the budget exceeds the prize amount, applicants are expected to show proof of additional funding; otherwise, the prize sum must cover the production costs.
