Fez Art Residency (FAR) is an independent arts organization based in the historic Medina of Fez.

We work with Moroccan and international artists, retreat leaders, and cultural practitioners to design place-based residencies and creative retreats that provide the space for reflection, inspiration, and professional growth in one of the world’s most magical and creative cities.

Our role is to offer guidance, local support, and cultural connection, helping retreat leaders and artists experience Fez Medina in an independent yet safe and supportive environment.

The Host a Retreat programme grew naturally when resident artists asked to return to Fez with their own creative communities, and lead retreats based on their practice.

After its initial success, FAR developed Host a Retreat into a structured programme that gives individual artists, collectives, and arts organisations the opportunity to design and lead their own creative retreat in Fez – building a new revenue stream while strengthening relationships with their community.

The concept is simple:
  • You bring your practice and community.
  • We provide the accommodation, logistics, marketing assistance, and on-the-ground support.
Programme Features
  1. Two hosting models that give you control over pricing, margins, and earning potential.
  2. Three flexible support packages that adapt to your retreat’s size, needs, and preferred level of assistance.
  3. Customizable options that allow you to shape the retreat around your vision, teaching style, and community.

Retreats take place in a beautifully restored 14th-century dar, located conveniently on the edge of Fez Medina with easy access to key sites and the airport.

Designed as a welcoming home for artists and creatives to come together, the dar includes:

  • Accommodation for up to 10 guests in five shared rooms
  • A generous roof terrace with panoramic Medina views
  • An onsite cook preparing fresh, traditional Moroccan cuisine daily

Eligibility:

Open to artists of all backgrounds, disciplines, and nationalities. We welcome proposals from emerging, mid-career, and established artists who can demonstrate:

  • A retreat concept aligned with FAR’s values
  • The capability or potential to lead and manage a group
  • A clear artistic practice that can translate into a retreat format
  • Professionalism, reliability, and collaborative spirit
  • Willingness to engage respectfully with the cultural context of Fez Medina

We encourage applications from artists of all genders, identities, cultures, and communities – including those traditionally underrepresented in retreat leadership.

Location:

The retreats take place in Fez Medina, Morocco, the world’s oldest medina, and a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich artisan heritage, medieval architecture, and vibrant cultural life.

As the world’s largest car-free urban area, the Medina offers a safe and inspiring setting where history, craft, and creative inspiration come together in every street as part of daily life.

We are currently scheduling retreats for the 2026 and 2027 programmes.

Application Fee:

There is no application fee.

This programme exists to help artists generate income, not to charge for entry.
