The Inside-Out Art Museum (IOAM) is a privately owned contemporary art museum in Beijing, registered with the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau in 2011, with a total area of 2,600 square meters spread across three floors of exhibition halls, equipped with professional museum hardware and software facilities and a dedicated studio for its Artist Residency Programme. The museum combines exhibition-making with research and curatorial practice, focusing on the intellectual and artistic history of Chinese contemporary art since the second half of the 20th century, and has hosted exhibitions and public programming exploring themes ranging from sound practice to institutional history, often in dialogue with international artists and curators.
This residency is offered through the Mondriaan Fund, the Dutch national fund for the visual arts and cultural heritage sector, one of six public cultural funds operating under the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The fund invests approximately €43 million annually on behalf of the Ministry, supporting hundreds of activities, projects, and programmes each year across the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Eligibility
- Open to visual artists and curators/art observers
- One work period of 3 months available: 1 March – 30 May 2027, with the exact start date within March determined by Inside-Out Art Museum in dialogue with the selected resident
- Room for 1 artist or 1 duo per period
- Duo applications (2 artists, 2 curators/observers, or a combination who structurally create work together) may apply; occasional collaborative partnerships may also be considered as duos if they submit a joint plan leading to one result
- Duos must live and work together in one space during the residency, but each person in a duo must submit a separate application
- General Mondriaan Fund Residency grant eligibility also applies (minimum 1 year of professional practice, embeddedness in Dutch/Caribbean professional practice, no concurrent overlapping Mondriaan Fund support, restrictions on concurrent enrollment in degree programmes, maximum 1 Residency grant per applicant per calendar year)
Program Benefits & Awards
- Subsidy of €8,478 for an artist, or €5,622 for a curator or art observer, to help cover travel expenses, material costs, and living costs (sum intended for 1 person)
- If a duo or collaborative partnership is selected, the total amount increases proportionally to cover additional travel and living costs for the second applicant
- Studio rental and living space costs, plus on-site support provided by Inside-Out Art Museum, paid directly to the museum by the Mondriaan Fund
- The residency apartment is noted as well suited to duos or collaborative partnerships
- Contribution for artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom may be increased to meet higher travel costs, assessed on a case-by-case basis

Additional Details
- Selection is made by an advisory committee, which proposes candidates to Inside-Out Art Museum; the museum makes the final decision on participants, and an interview may be part of the selection process
- Processing time for this selection procedure may exceed the standard 3-month period
- If an applicant applies for two different residencies within the same call, the assessment of oeuvre/practice quality and cultural entrepreneurship is conducted once and applies to both applications
- Because only 1 or 2 residents can be selected per residency per round, the Fund notes that applicants may also consider applying for an Artist Project at a different residency location not already offered within the Mondriaan Fund's residency rounds
