Short Description:

Kunsthalle Wien is Vienna’s central institution for contemporary art, operating across its Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz venues. It presents exhibitions, events, and educational formats, commissioning new productions and fostering collaborations with both local and international artists and institutions. The institution aims to provide a platform for artistic discourse and to engage broad audiences with contemporary art in all its forms.


Role: Chief Curator

The Chief Curator will lead the curatorial department and work closely with the artistic director and other department heads. This role is central to the artistic and strategic development of the institution.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the curatorial team in delivering exhibitions, commissions, and special projects.
  • Oversee the editorial production of publications.
  • Manage program planning, project allocation, budgets, schedules, and reporting.
  • Support artists through the commissioning and exhibition process in collaboration with production staff.
  • Collaborate with the education team to develop public programs linked to exhibitions.
  • Write and edit texts for exhibitions, catalogues, reports, and communications.
  • Mentor curatorial staff and strengthen project management practices.
  • Represent Kunsthalle Wien nationally and internationally.
  • Support fundraising, external partnerships, and contractual negotiations.

Eligibility:

Minimum 5 years’ experience commissioning artists and organizing contemporary art exhibitions (public institution preferred).

Experience developing exhibition publications.

Strong knowledge of contemporary art and 20th-century art history.

Proven writing ability for broad audiences (published texts required).

Leadership and team management skills.

Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Fluent in German and English; additional languages are an asset.

Program Benefits or Awards:

Contract: Permanent, full-time (40 hrs/week)
Salary: Minimum €54,400 gross annually (overpayment possible, depending on experience)
