Project Conservator, Paintings (Regular, Part-Time).

This position is designed for an experienced professional to take on specific conservation and restoration projects as needed. The role balances meticulous hands-on treatment with academic research and project management. The Conservator ensures that every intervention is documented to the highest ethical standards, contributing to the museum's mission of scholarly excellence and public engagement.

The Role Overview

  • Salary: $65.00 Hourly.
  • Contract Type: Regular, Part-Time (Union represented by AFSCME District Council 36).
  • Reporting To: Senior Conservator, Paintings.
  • Department: Conservation Center.
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA.

Position & Tasks

  • Conducts thorough condition assessments and develops stabilization/restoration procedures.
  • Executes conservation treatments including cleaning, structural repair, and re-framing.
  • Manages specific conservation projects from inception to completion within budget and time constraints.
  • Collaborates with curators and researchers to coordinate efforts and address historical contexts of artworks.
  • Maintains comprehensive records, including high-quality photographic documentation and written reports.
  • Contributes to scholarly publications, exhibition catalogues, and public outreach initiatives.
  • Participates in public lectures, workshops, and tours to raise awareness of art conservation.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies and ethical guidelines in the conservation field.

Eligibility

  • Must hold a Master’s degree in Conservation, Art History, or a related field (Specialization in paintings preferred).

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a large institutional framework.
