Short Description:

Summer School: State of the Sky is an interdisciplinary, arts-centered educational program organized by the Mattress Factory. It will be held in conjunction with the State of the Sky exhibition at 516 Sampsonia Way, offering six bi-weekly seminars, access to a solar darkroom, and public events like curated film screenings. The program focuses on reimagining dominant narratives by engaging with archival documents through creative translation and experimentation.

Selected applicants will be notified by Friday, April 18, 2025. Only twelve participants will be accepted.

Cancellations up to one week before the start are fully refundable.

Eligibility
The program welcomes regional artists and non-artists from any background—including the humanities, science and technology, activism, and community work—who are at least 21 years old. There are no restrictions on experience level, making it inclusive for undergraduates, retired professionals, and mid-career practitioners alike. However, participants must be physically able to climb stairs, and the venue is not wheelchair accessible.

Theme
The central theme explores how documents housed in archives, museums, and libraries can be recontextualized to challenge dominant historical narratives. The program encourages interdisciplinary research, deskilling/reskilling, and experimental documentation techniques like solar photograms.
