The Mudhouse Residency, established in 2015, is an artist-founded and operated program located in the historic village of Agios Ioannis on the Island of Crete, Greece. Celebrating over a decade of supporting the international art community, the residency is designed to provide an immersive cultural experience within the profound historical context of the Minoan civilization. The program encourages multicultural and multi-generational dialogues across traditional boundaries.

2026 Summer Residency Late Acceptance.

The Mudhouse invites international contemporary artists for a two-week intensive session in southern Crete. This late call specifically targets the final session of the summer, offering artists the solitude to foster creative growth and a collaborative community to enrich professional practices. Residents have the freedom to focus on their practice, explore natural landscapes, and engage with local history, culminating in a joint exhibition installed in village ruins and a dedicated gallery space.

Eligibility

  • Skill Level: Open to international contemporary artists across a manifold of disciplines.
  • Diversity: The residency hosts a diverse cohort of multicultural and multi-generational artists.
  • Requirements: Accepted artists are invited to present a slideshow, lecture, or reading of their work for fellow residents.

Program Benefits and Awards

  • Facilities: Provides accommodations, dedicated studio space, and two meals each day.
  • Guided Research: Each session includes a guided tour of a Minoan archaeological site led by archaeobotanist Carly Henkel.
  • Full Fellowships: Awarded by a selection committee based on the merit of the applicant's work.
  • Partial Fellowships & Financial Aid: Approximately 30% of accepted applicants receive partial fellowships.
  • Work-Research Positions: Approximately 30% of artists are granted work-research positions, providing additional financial aid in exchange for services like studio maintenance or exhibition preparation.
  • Visiting Artist: Playwright Jojo O’Neil will be the visiting artist for all three 2026 sessions.

Fees

  • Late Application Fee: $10.00 USD.
  • Deposit: A 35% deposit of the residency fee is required immediately upon acceptance to reserve a spot.
