Short Description

The Oregon Arts Commission is requesting submissions from artists and artist representatives of available artworks to be considered for purchase for a Percent for Art in Public Places opportunity at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center. The High Ground Housing project is a new three-story, 35,837 square foot building that will provide housing options for the HMSC campus. The building will be open in fall of 2025.

Themes, Goals, and Characteristics for the Art

The art selection committee has identified themes, goals, and desired characteristics for the High Ground Housing project. Artworks could relate to one or more of the following themes, characteristics, and goals:

  • Celebrates marine sciences and marine and other natural worlds;
  • is welcoming, creates a sense of home/safety/shelter/comfort;
  • is inclusive, accessible, and supportive of diversity;
  • has conceptual and/or physical connectivity with the Hatfield Marine Science Center, the local community, and the fishing industry.

Art Locations

There are multiple potential art locations for artworks in the lobby of the High Ground Housing complex. Images and dimensions of the art locations are in the final pages of this document.
1) Lobby wall locations for 2-D artworks.
2) Lobby ceiling opportunities. Artwork can be ceiling-hung. There are visible utilities below the ceiling in the lobby. The selection committee is interested in considering artworks that could hide these utilities while still allowing for utility and ceiling access when necessary.
