Organizer Information
Founded in 2015 and operated by the Estonian Academy of Arts, Narva Art Residency (NART) is an international cultural platform and residency space located in Narva, Estonia, directly on the Estonian-Russian border. Housed in a historic 19th-century villa originally built for the director of the Kreenholm Textile Manufacture, NART facilitates artist residencies, exhibitions, workshops, and public talks at a symbolic intersection between the European Union/Schengen area and Russia.

Title & Description
"Sensing the Border" — Nordic-Baltic Artist Residency at Narva Art Residency (NART): Call for Applications
NART has officially launched the open call for "Sensing the Border," a specialized 10-week residency program funded by Nordic Culture Point. The initiative invites five artists from the Nordic and Baltic regions to explore the geopolitical reality of the Estonian-Russian border through an embodied, multisensory approach. Each selected artist will focus on one of the five human senses—sight, hearing, touch, smell, or taste—transforming border landscapes, shared river acoustics, urban textures, and local traditions into physical and emotional encounters that counter flat geopolitical narratives and foster lasting dialogue.
Project Framework & Thematic Concept
Instead of approaching Narva through external media projections or war-driven narratives, Sensing the Border focuses on direct presence, listening, and multisensory research:
- The Five Senses: 5 selected artists will each be assigned/focused on one specific sense (Sight, Hearing, Touch, Smell, or Taste) as an entry point to the border environment.
- Duration & Exploration: The 10-week stay provides ample time for deep contextual research in Narva, community engagement, and regional trips across Estonia (including networking in Tallinn and Tartu).
Categories
The residency accepts All Artistic Disciplines (Visual Arts, Sound Art, Performance, Spatial/Architectural Interventions, Textile, Media Art, Culinary/Sensory Practices, Literature, and Socially Engaged Art).
Eligibility
- Geographic Residency: Open strictly to professional individual artists who are permanent residents of Nordic or Baltic countries: Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Åland, Latvia, or Lithuania.
- Exclusions: Artists residing in Estonia are not eligible for this grant. The call is designed for individual artists (not groups/collectives).
- Availability: Applicants must be available for a continuous 10-week residency stay in Narva.
- AI Tool Policy: While AI tools may be used for language checking or structuring, applicants are strongly advised to write in their authentic voice, as fully AI-generated proposals will be identified and penalized by the jury.
