United Airlines Welcome to Houston Baggage Claim Artwork
This is a permanent public art commission for the newly renovated Terminal B at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The purpose is to select one artist or artist-team to design, fabricate, and install a bold, freestanding artwork or sculpture that acts as a visual landmark symbolizing arrival in Houston. The theme highlights the city’s welcoming spirit and sense of place, conveyed through form, color, and concept (direct Houston references optional). The artwork should be iconic, engaging, photogenic, and interactive, encouraging passengers to share photos and experiences.

Eligibility
Open to Houston-area artists and artist-teams aged 18+ who can work at the required scale and meet the project timeline. “Houston Area Artist” means residing in the Greater Houston Area (Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, or Waller counties). Galleries may apply for artists but must submit separate applications per artist; multi-artist submissions on one form are ineligible. Incomplete or non-compliant applications will be withdrawn.
Program Benefits & Awards
One artist or artist team selected for a $350,000 commission to design, fabricate, and install the artwork. The piece will be permanently displayed and accessioned into the City of Houston’s Art Collection, providing lasting visibility and legacy.
