Short Description
The Visiting Senior Fellowships provide scholars with two-month appointments at the National Gallery’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. Fellows conduct full-time research and receive access to the National Gallery’s library, art collection, and Washington, D.C.’s broader research resources. They also participate in lectures, colloquia, and discussions with scholars.
The program includes:
Leonard A. Lauder Visiting Senior Fellowships (up to 2 awarded)
Paul Mellon & Beinecke Visiting Senior Fellowships (up to 5 awarded)
Fields of Study
Fellowships support research in the history, theory, and criticism of visual arts from any period or geographic region. The Leonard A. Lauder Fellowship prioritizes understudied areas in art scholarship.
Scholars from any discipline whose work engages with visual art or culture are encouraged to apply.
Application Requirements
A complete application must include:
✅ A research proposal
✅ A published article or book chapter
✅ Two letters of recommendation
Selection Process
Fellowships are open to scholars of all nationalities and ages.
Applications are reviewed by an external committee of art history and related discipline experts.
Fellowships cannot be postponed or renewed.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
✔️ Have held a PhD for at least five years or possess equivalent professional experience.
✔️ Not apply for other fellowships at the Center simultaneously.
✔️ Not be currently affiliated with the National Gallery.
✔️ Wait three years before reapplying if they have previously held a fellowship.
Program Benefits or Awards
$7,000–$8,000 (depending on relocation).
Leonard A. Lauder Fellows: Up to $12,500, including a $2,500 research supplement.
Fellows receive an office in the East Building and, if available, housing.
