The IEA Experimental Research Residency

The IEA offers time, space, facilities, and support for artists to engage with their research projects.

Residents will be expected to engage with the Alfred University campus and communities which extend to Allegany County and the Western New York, Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions of New York. This engagement is often in the form of a public lecture / artist talk, a demonstration, course-specific involvement, or another agreed-upon event.

We ask that all residents leave sample images and copies of work produced during their residency period for the IEA archive. The archive serves as an extensive educational resource for students and future residents.

All residencies are made possible by The National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, and the Schein-Joseph Endowment.

This residency program provides opportunities for a diverse group of artists to advance their careers and knowledge of developing new media studio technologies and practices. We support experimentation that can be instrumental in the production of an expanding and culturally significant catalog of electronic, time-based, and new media artworks.

Artists have access to a combination of emerging, contemporary, and historical media arts tools and materials. Many of these tools are unique and not ordinarily available in a studio setting. The resident artists have 24-hour dedicated access to the IEA studios and equipment. The IEA staff will be available to work with the resident artist during the regular workday. Additionally, technical staff and faculty may also be available for consultation. The IEA video and sound studio offers artists an integrated system with real-time video image-processing software, hardware, and video capture. The print media studios have an extensive range of technologies that span across digital and traditional that explore many hybrid possibilities. Please view the facilities page for more information.
