Short Description

Launched in 2022, New Voices is Print Center New York’s annual open call program, which provides opportunities for a curator-selected cohort of six to eight U.S.–based artists to present their work and develop their practices through a group exhibition, artist-led public programming, focused conversation and community-building, and individualized resources for artistic and professional development.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • currently reside in a state or territory in the United States. Accepted cohort artists will be asked to fill out a W-9 (Request for Taxpayer Identification Number), and to provide a Tax Identification Number such as a social security number (SSN), employment identification number (EIN), or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN).
  • engage printmaking in their practice through concept, materials, or techniques. Artists do not need to identify primarily as “printmakers” to apply. The programming, relationship-building, and artist development resources included in this program are designed to support artists with an investment in the printmaking field. Artists who work exclusively in another medium (oil painting, sculpture, or photography, for example) may not be best served by this program.
  • be working without institutional support from a major gallery or degree-seeking academic program. Gallery representation and support varies from place to place; you will be asked to share any gallery affiliation, and this will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must be at least one year out from a degree-seeking academic program, such as an MFA or BFA, related to their practice. Applicants must not be actively enrolled, or entering such a program in the 2025–26 academic year.

Applications are encouraged from artists of any race, ethnicity, national origin, age, physical ability, gender identity or expression, sexuality, or other experience or identity. We welcome applications from U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, undocumented immigrants, refugees, people seeking asylum, temporary visa holders, stateless people, and those with all other citizenship and immigration statuses.

Submission Requirements

  • Short Answers: Responses to three prompts about your practice, submitted in writing (250 words each) or as recorded verbal statements (2–3 minutes each).
  • Work Samples: Up to ten (10) images of existing work created within the last four years (since January 1, 2021). Selected works do not need to be from a singular project or body of work, but should give a cohesive and holistic view of your artmaking practice.
  • Curriculum Vitae: A CV including exhibition history and other relevant activity, such as residencies or fellowships (past or upcoming).

Program Benefits & Awards

Group Exhibition (anticipated June–August, 2026)

Selected works by each of the cohort artists will be on view in Print Center New York’s ground floor gallery at 535 West 24th Street in Chelsea in the summer of 2026, accompanied by a publication featuring a critical essay by the curator.

Artist Cohort Intensive (anticipated June 2–4, 2026)

Artists will travel to New York City for a three-day convening of the artist cohort, featuring: the exhibition’s opening reception; in-gallery critiques with invited artists, curators, and other arts professionals; private visits to publishers, workshops, and galleries, developed based on the cohort’s interests and needs; and a shared meal to build community in-person.

Public Programs

Each artist will participate in one public program (either in-person or online). Artists will help determine the content, focus, and format of their public programming in collaboration with Print Center New York staff. Programs could include artist-led tours, moderated conversations, hands-on workshops, or performances.

Artistic and Professional Development

Alongside individual opportunities, the summer will be punctuated by two virtual meetings of the cohort focused on idea and resource exchange. Other development opportunities may include practical skill-building sessions, one-on-one studio visits, informal group crits, or presentations from thinkers and professionals in the field. Activities will be virtual or in-person as opportunities allow; artists will not be expected to travel to participate.

Print Center New York is committed to providing financial support for artists and underwriting program-related costs to ensure artists have support at a critical moment in their careers.

  • Honorarium
Each artist will receive an unrestricted artist fee of $2,500 for participation in the exhibition, public programs, and artist development activities, paid in three installments over the course of the program. There are no requirements for reporting how this fee is used.
  • Shipping and Framing
Print Center New York will cover the reasonable cost of round-trip shipping and framing expenses for artworks on view. Artists are not expected to contribute to shipping or framing costs.
  • Travel, Lodging, and Meals
For the three day in-person intensive, artists will receive a meals and incidentals stipend. The reasonable cost of round-trip travel and lodging will be paid for artists coming from outside NYC.
