The Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK Hamburg) is an internationally oriented art university offering Fine Arts BA and MA programs. The interdisciplinary curriculum encompasses a wide range of artistic subjects and workshops, encouraging independent, self-directed work through artistic and academic engagement, project-based learning, and experimental practices.
 

Role

The Professor of Art Theory will:

  • Teach in the field of art theory, including courses conducted in English.
  • Engage with and contribute to debates in the globally interconnected contemporary art scene.
  • Provide leadership in theoretical discourse within the department of Theory and History.
  • Participate actively in the academic life of HFBK Hamburg.

Eligibility:

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A strong national and international academic track record in art theory.
  • Expertise in areas such as: materiality of the arts; transcultural perspectives on art; art and gender/queerness; performativity.
  • Experience in university-level teaching, with willingness to teach in English.
  • Commitment to collaborative participation in university affairs.

Program Benefits or Awards:

Full-time professorship, initially six years (with options for tenure or extension under § 16 section 2 Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz – HmbHG)
