Short Description:

The Design Museum Brussels is looking for a Collections and Research Manager. Reporting to the management, they contribute to the promotion, study and management of the museum’s collections, made up of the  Plastic Design Collection , which outlines the landscape of plastics in design from the 1950s to the present day, and  belgisch design belge , a permanent space dedicated to the history of Belgian design. Through their expertise in design from the second half of the 20th century and historical Belgian design, they help to strengthen the museum’s position as a leading institution in the field of design, to enrich knowledge of existing collections and to develop new acquisitions in line with the museum’s scientific policy. Ensuring their accessibility to all audiences and researchers, they design and implement research and dissemination actions around the collections, in close collaboration with the entire team, in particular with the Exhibitions, Conservation department and the department in charge of cultural mediation and audiences.

Job Description

Presentation of collections, research and mediation:

  • Participate in the development of the presentation of collections and research, in particular through the renewal of displays, the redefinition of exhibition spaces and the implementation of new mediation systems, in consultation with the Exhibitions department.
  • Participate in the prospecting and dissemination of collections by creating temporary exhibitions (at the museum and traveling) or integrating pieces into curatorial projects led by other institutions.
  • Further scientific research applied to the collections, participate in the writing of museum publications and external scientific publications, speak at conferences and support academic and school research projects.
  • Contribute to the promotion actions implemented by the mediation team, in particular through the creation of content and participation in the digitization of collections.

Collection developments and acquisitions:

  • Contribute to the promotion of the collections, in line with the strategic and scientific orientations of the museum and in collaboration with the team.
  • Participate in the development and enrichment of collections (items, documents, library) in collaboration with the Conservation department.
  • Maintain a network that contributes to the development of collections.

Collection management:

  • Ensure administrative management: acquisition, collection, recording and documentation.

Eligibility:

  • Expertise in design history, particularly Belgian design and 20th century design.
  • Expertise in museology or collections management.
  • Ability to develop scientific research projects and produce publications.
  • Mastery of documentation, inventory and preventive conservation methodologies.
  • Excellent writing and popular science skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and aptitude for collaborative and interdisciplinary work.
  • Strong organizational skills, administrative rigor and autonomy.
  • Fluent in French, Dutch and English.
  • Higher education (master’s degree) in art history, design, museology or related field.
  • Proven experience in a similar position in a museum or heritage institution
