ASYMMETRY CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP New York

We are excited to announce our global Open Call for the 2025 Asymmetry Curatorial Fellowship at SculptureCenter, New York. This is a 20-month post for an early career curator to be embedded within SculptureCenter’s internationally active curatorial department. The Fellow will gain comprehensive experience in the planning, research, organisation and installation of exhibitions in a leading institution. The Fellowship will further provide the recipient with the opportunity to develop and contribute to ongoing research, public programmes, publications and other departmental initiatives.

The Asymmetry Curatorial Fellowship marks a new partnership between Asymmetry and SculptureCenter. Both organisations have a strong reputation for promoting essential voices across thought and practice. SculptureCenter is known for championing underrecognised and emerging artists, providing direct support to the artists for the creation of new work. We, with an ever-expanding global network, are committed to supporting the next generation of curators to make a valuable contribution to the arts ecosystem. Beginning in the summer of 2025, it will be our first international fellowship placement, and first collaboration outside of the UK and Europe.

The Fellowship is constructed around, but not limited to, two full seasons of SculptureCenter’s signature In Practice open call programme. It will provide instrumental hands-on experience including exhibition organisation, artist liaison, project-based research, production support, publishing and editorial input, and public programming. There will also be opportunities to introduce the curatorial department to artists whose work resonates with SculptureCenter’s mission and purpose. The position is geared towards a practitioner with demonstrated knowledge and experience of Chinese and Sinophone cultural ecosystems, contemporary artists, and curatorial practice, based in the regions or internationally.

The successful applicant will receive the following salary: 55,000 USD per annum for the first 12 months; then 40,000 USD total for 8 months (60,000 USD per annum, pro rata for 8 months). Benefits include health/dental/vision insurance (beginning the first day of the month following employment start date) and 401k with employer match. Visa/legal fee coverage up to 5,000 USD is available if needed.

ABOUT THE CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

The 2025 Asymmetry Curatorial Fellowship will provide time and space for critical conversations, close reading and rigorous thought, alongside the development of invaluable practical skills.

The Asymmetry Curatorial Fellow will work closely with SculptureCenter’s curatorial team, who are committed to pastoral care and supportive professional development. Reporting to SculptureCenter’s Curator, the Fellow will work directly on research and exhibition development, public programmes, editorial, and other departmental activities related to SculptureCenter’s artistic programme. The Fellow will be given the opportunity to research and develop aspects of public-facing programming over which they will have responsibility for implementation. Throughout the placement, mentoring and assistance from senior staff will allow the Fellow to develop and refine their skills and establish their own curatorial ambitions. The placement is designed to instil agency, to allow the realisation of new curatorial achievements, to enable, formulate and expand on new ideas and growth in their profession.
