City of Melbourne Artist Call: Australian Memorial Commission

International artists are invited to express interest for the design of a permanent memorial in the heart of Melbourne. This $2.5million AUD commission will honor workers who have died while at work. Expressions of interest are now open.

City of Melbourne is working with partners to create a memorial in the heart of the city. This is a significant new public art commission with a $2.5 million budget funded by the Victorian Government.

The Memorial will be a meaningful place where families, friends and colleagues of workers who have died while at work can gather, reflect and commemorate their lives.

We’re committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive space where people can come together for significant occasions throughout the year.

The Memorial is a partnership between City of Melbourne, Victorian Trades Hall Council and the Victorian Government.

Location of the memorial

The Eight Hour Monument Reserve will be home to the Memorial, across from the Victorian Trades Hall Council building who have been a voice for working people and their families for more than 150 years.

Located on the corner of Victoria and Russell streets in the city, this site is directly in front of RMIT University’s historic Emily McPherson building. The reserve features the existing Eight Hour Monument which celebrates those involved in making Victoria the first place in the world to mandate the eight-hour day.

Artist selection process

The Memorial will be commissioned through a two-stage process:

Stage one: Expressions of interest – Tuesday 20 August to Monday 30 September 2024

  • Applicants are asked to respond to three questions about their working methodology and provide an artist bio, CV and images of their previous work.
  • Please note: No artwork proposal is required at this stage.

Stage two: Concept design – November 2024 to January 2025

  • Shortlisted artists (or teams) will develop their final artwork proposals in consultation with the Project Working Group and stakeholders.
  • Artists must be available to attend an in-person workshop intensive in Melbourne during November 2024.
