Curatorial Assistant: New Museum in New York

Position Overview:

The Curatorial Assistant will provide support to the Curators and the Artistic Director, to ensure the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations and exhibition preparation within the Department. This is a full-time, non-exempt union-represented position subject to the terms of the Museum’s agreement with Local 2110, UAW, and is eligible for the New Museum’s employee benefits programs. The salary for this position is $ 52,024.73.  This position is a temporarily hybrid role and requires working onsite 3 days a week.

Reports to: Artistic Director

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide administrative / office support to the Artistic Director and Curators, including responding to inquiries, coordinating travel for Curators and Artistic Director, expense reporting and reconciliation, upkeep of physical and electronic files, recording meeting minutes, sorting mail, and managing / responding to phone messages. In general, the incumbent will work proactively to implement efficiencies within the Curatorial Department, working with the team to develop processes and guidelines for the department. 
  • Provide exhibition coordination support to the Artistic Director, Curators, and Exhibitions Department, including preliminary research, managing exhibition checklists, assisting with lender lists and the loan process, exhibition design, obtaining archive materials, procuring equipment, and circulating / tracking touring exhibition documents. Coordinate studio visits, gather and organize portfolios. 
  • Assist the Artistic Director and Curators on commissions, productions, and realization of new artworks by liaising with artists, their studios, galleries and fabricators. 
  • Provide support for the exhibition publication process including keeping track of publication schedules, corresponding with authors, designers, printers, and publishers. Produce and proofread object labels and interpretative texts for exhibitions and exhibition publications, according to New Museum standards, including adherence to the Museum’s established style guide.
  • Assemble clear and well-designed exhibition and curatorial PPT presentations for Board, staff, fundraising, and external purposes.  
  • Liaise with the Development and Education and Public Engagement Departments on guest list management, fundraising events, and exhibition-related public programs, and communicate with artists, galleries, and patrons.

Qualified candidates will have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (MA preferable) in art history or curatorial studies. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of administrative or project coordination experience in museums or galleries. 
  • Excellent written, editorial, and oral skills. Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously. 
  • Thorough understanding of local, national, and international contemporary art scenes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint; fluency in Photoshop and SketchUp. Experience in list and calendar management. 
  • Diplomacy, confidentiality, and teamwork skills are essential.
