Drawing Centre Diepenheim Open Call

Drawing Centre Diepenheim, situated in a unique location in rural Twente, inspires exchanging stories and discovering new perspectives through drawing. The Drawing Centre connects artists, visitors and the people of the Diepenheim community through an innovative program of exhibitions, residencies and various activities.

The Drawing Centre’s residency program offers artists the opportunity to engage in dialogue with the landscape and community of Diepenheim, to experiment, create and discover new dimensions of drawing. The platform defines drawing as a universal human activity that allows us to have a grip on the whims of our time. Artists and the public are encouraged to make connections between drawing, other disciplines and developments within society.

The charming rural setting of Diepenheim, the large exhibition building (285 m2), two residence studios (160 m2) and nine artist gardens (12,000 m2) offer space – in both senses of the word – for reflection, research and experimentation. Drawing Centre Diepenheim collaborates with Werkplaats Diepenheim on the residencies. Werkplaats Diepenheim is home to more than 850 m2 of living space, studios and workshops, including a lithography workshop (Basement Press Diepenheim) and a communal area. The Werkplaats also offers facilities for dance, music and theatre, including both indoor and outdoor stages for rehearsals and performances.

In consultation with Drawing Centre Diepenheim, the result of both work periods will be integrated into the current programme. An appropriate medium of presentation or activity will be selected in consultation with the individual participants.

Information about Drawing Centre

For whom?

The work periods are intended for artists who want to experiment with drawing, and want to investigate the meaning and influence of drawing in their artistic process. Experience with drawing is not required, but curiosity and a willingness to explore the possibilities of the medium is required.

Preference is given to project proposals that make it clear why the proposed project must be carried out specifically at Drawing Centre Diepenheim. It is important to explain how and why local residents, visitors, local associations, the landscape, gardens, public space, archives and/or local history research will be involved.

Work period

2 three-month work periods are available:

  • 1 April to 30 June 2025
  • 1 September to 30 November 2025

Applicants are asked to state their preference for a work period on the application form, and every effort will be made to honour this preference.

How much

The Mondriaan Fund makes a monthly contribution of € 2,165 available to help cover travel expenses, material costs and accommodation costs. This sum is intended for one person. In addition, the selected resident is expected to pay a 10% personal contribution (the Mondriaan Fund automatically takes this into account in their ultimate contribution, you do not need to do anything).

In the case that a duo or collaboration is selected for the residency, the associated contribution will be raised to cover additional travel expenses, as well as a proportionate sum to contribute to the other applicant’s accommodation costs.

The contribution to residents based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can be increased to accommodate any higher travel costs. This is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applications

The deadline for submitting an application for a work period in 2025 is 26 September 2024 before 04:00 PM (CEST) / 10:00 AM (AST).

General terms and conditions

Selection

The selection is made with the help of an advisory committee. Based on the submitted documents, the advisory committee nominates candidates to Drawing Center Diepenheim. Drawing Center Diepenheim chooses the final participants for the residency.

Other grants for residencies in the Netherlands and other countries

As only 1 or 2 residents can be selected for any given residency during each selection round, many applicants will be disappointed. For this reason, we point out that you can also apply for an Artist Project with a residency at a different location. That Artist Project residency location may not be one of those already offered in the Mondriaan Fund Residency application round.
