FIRECULT (Wildfire Resilient Cultural Heritage) is a new international collaborative research project funded by the Belmont Forum and delivered by Imperial College London (leading partner), Newcastle University and The Maltings (Berwick) Trust (co-leading the artistic research work package) with University College Dublin, Izmir institute of Technology and University of Palermo.
The project examines the relationship between wildfires, community and cultural heritage. Wildfire is a natural earth system process in close interactive relationship with human activity since prehistoric times, that has shaped cultural landscapes and defined ways of life. Humans use fire to modify their landscape, clear land for agriculture and development and replenish soil nutrients. At the same time, fire’s destructive power endangers livelihoods and landscapes.
The research partners are now looking to appoint three artists who will spend time in the case study areas (Ireland, Turkey and Italy) working with academic and local partners to explore the relationship between wildfires, community, and cultural heritage through artistic research, engagement and activity.
Each artistic commission is budgeted at £15,000 (€17,760) including artist fees, travel, accommodation, research fees and materials.
