Fleetstreet Theater Hamburg Residency Open Call

Since January 1, 2011, the Fleetstreet Theater Hamburg, together with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Hamburg Cultural Foundation and the Rudolf Augstein Foundation, has been running a residency program for artist groups who work as cross-disciplinarily as possible using the means of the performing arts, the visual arts, film and/or music.

The Fleetstreet Residency Programme is intended to support young groups who, with manageable financial means, develop productions that are suitable for smaller theatre spaces. The funding is also intended to offer the opportunity to deepen research, try out new strategies and develop work processes; the final presentations can take the form of showings, interim presentations, discussions, exhibitions, workshops or similar and do not necessarily have to be performed in the form of a finished production.

The Fleetstreet Theater in Hamburg and a residential studio (3 rooms, kitchen, bathroom) in the immediate vicinity of the theater are made available to the groups for a period of one to three months. In addition, the artists receive funding from the Hamburg Cultural Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Media and the Rudolf Augstein Foundation in the amount of €1,000 each per month to cover the costs of implementing and presenting their project (in total, the artists or group have €3,000 per month at their disposal). Funding from these foundations does not need to be applied for separately.

Details about the rooms provided and their equipment can be found here:

The aim of the Fleetstreet Residency Programme is to give groups of artists the opportunity to independently develop a project in the spaces of the Fleetstreet Theatre and to make this project or the work process in the Fleetstreet Theatre accessible to the public.

The focus of the residency is to promote research projects and experiments that often cannot take place in classic production contexts.

In contrast to other work grants, the groups are not only provided with a rehearsal room/studio, but they can use the entire Fleetstreet Theater exclusively during their residency. This enables, among other things, spontaneous performance and presentation formats to take place as part of the process, such as smaller weekly events. As a pure residency theater, the theater has no ongoing performances and therefore no employees who are on site every day, but has different contacts for technology, press and coordination. This requires and enables a great deal of independence for the residents as temporary operators of the Fleetstreet Theater.

FAQ:

1. Each residency will receive €3,000 per month, regardless of group size.

2. We usually award one-month residencies; awards of two or three months are rare (a maximum of one or two residencies per year last for more than two months) and are aimed at groups that are planning larger productions and can provide a plausible justification for the longer funding period.

3. Artists/groups are welcome to apply for other funds and financing at the same time; this does not conflict with the Fleetstreet residency. Experience has shown that it is not easy to obtain further funding from Hamburg, as three local sponsors are already involved in the Fleetstreet residency (Cultural Authority, Rudolf Augstein Foundation, Hamburg Cultural Foundation).

It is therefore recommended to apply for the residency program with projects that can be realized with financial resources of a maximum of 3000€/month, regardless of the group size.

4. Fleetstreet is a small, non-commercial theatre with an auditorium that seats around 60-80 people, a stage that is around 4 x 6 metres and a small backstage area. The projects submitted should therefore not be huge and complex productions, as there is not enough space and the necessary equipment for this.

jury

The awarding of residency scholarships is decided by a jury that currently consists of the following people:

Anna Augstein, Chairwoman of the Rudolf Augstein Foundation
Elise von Bernstorff, theatre scholar, freelance dramaturge
Gesa Engelschall, Executive Director of the Hamburg Cultural Foundation
Ulrike Steffel, Independent Performing Arts, Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media
András Siebold, Artistic Director Kampnagel, International Summer Festival Hamburg
Hans Jochen Waitz, Board Member Fleetstreet eV
Sasha Rau, Actress, Director, Author
Stephanie Reuter, Rudolf Augstein Foundation

Applications can be submitted at any time. The jury usually meets once a year.
The next application deadline is September 15, 2024.
