Giancarlo DiTrapano (1974-2021) was the founder, editor, and publisher of Tyrant Books, which the Washington Post called “the forefront of progressive literature” in 2019. Tyrant published groundbreaking works such as the PEN-Award-Winning Preparation for the Next Life by Atticus Lish (2015), The Sarah Book by Scott McClanahan (2015), What Purpose Did I Serve in Your Life by Marie Calloway (2013), and LIVEBLOG by Megan Boyle (2015).

By seeking out and giving voice to writers in the margins and on the rise, Gian’s life work was spent in service to those who create outside of the mainstream. The Foundation that bears his name exists to do the same.

Our residencies are open to writers, translators, musicians, artists (working in all mediums), actors, directors, dancers, etc. from around the world—pretty much anyone who is looking for uninterrupted time to create new creative work.

All residencies are fully funded, which means we pay for airfare, and full room and board at our 17th-century villa and cultural center in Sezze Romano, Italy. We are currently offering residencies for two weeks each in the spring and fall.

Applications for our Spring 2025 residency are open now through January 1, 2025. The residency will take place from May 18 – Jun 1, 2025. Click on the link below to apply.
