Headlands Artist Awards Open Call

More OPEN CALLs: today, we are focusing on three artist awards, which are fully sponsored opportunities that provide non-restricted to the awardee. Read below to learn more.

1, the Tournesol Award is a yearlong, onsite & offsite residency that recognizes an emerging Bay Area painter and provides studio space, a $10,000 stipend and resources for a culminating project.

Headlands is committed to maintaining and supporting artists living and working in the region. This award, now in its 21st year, provides many opportunities to participate in our international artist community through meals, studio visits, Open Houses and more.

The Tournesol Award recognizes an emerging Bay Area painter in support of establishing and maintaining a career in the region. The Award supports a full year of artistic development, and includes a $10,000 stipend, a private studio, and a culminating exhibition or project of the artist’s choice.

2, the Chiaro Award is an onsite residency, up to 10 weeks, that includes a $15,000 stipend. This award is specific to mid-career painters living anywhere in the United States.

The Chiaro Award is a fully sponsored artist residency and $15,000 prize for a mid-career painter residing in the United States. The Chiaro Award residency includes a private studio, and inclusion in a dynamic network of Headlands’ creative practitioners and thinkers.

3, the Chamberlain Award is an onsite residency for artists working in the social practice discipline. The award includes a $10,000 stipend.

Chamberlain Award is a fully sponsored artist residency and $10,000 prize to support an artist working in the social practice discipline. This award supports artists employing non-traditional media to creatively engage with social concerns of the day.

Program Goals

  • To invest in individuals at the cutting edge of the social practice field, whose artwork creates dialogue and social
    change.
  • To support artists to explore and experiment in order to take their work to the next level.
  • To build a nurturing and dynamic community of local, national, and international artists and thinkers.
  • To encourage artists to develop ideas and work within the context of the Marin Headlands, a part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
  • To bring national and international artists to the Bay Area to engage and have cross-cultural exchange with local artists and audiences.

Eligibility

  • Artists not currently enrolled in an academic program at the time requested residency would take place.
    Eligibility of artists enrolled in PhD programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Alumni of Headlands’ Artists Programs are eligible to apply for the Chamberlain Award, with the exception
    of previous recipients of Alumni New Works, Bay Area Fellowship, Chamberlain, Chiaro, or Tournesol
    Awards.
  • Must be able to speak basic English.

Program Details

  • Fully sponsored 6- to 10-week residency
  • Paid roundtrip airfare
  • 100- to 2000-sq.-foot studio
  • Private bedroom in shared house
  • A maximum two week stay for families in the Family House (by request only and subject to availability)
  • Five chef-prepared meals per week
  • Access to vehicles on-site
  • Facilities access: Basic woodshop; audio/video equipment; artists’ library with computers, scanner, and printer
  • Wi-Fi in designated spaces
  • Up to 15 Artists in Residence living on-site
  • Up to 8 other local Headlands artists working in studios on-site
  • Participation in monthly “Show & Tell” nights
  • Participation in seasonal Open House
  • Access to Headlands Public Events
  • Field trips to Bay Area museums, galleries, and cultural venues
  • Become part of Headlands Alumni Network
