The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) invites artists to apply for its annual residency program, with opportunities ranging from 3 to 12 months. In collaboration with the Houston Center for Photography (HCP), the program includes a special residency for interdisciplinary artists working at the intersection of craft and photography.

Residency Duration: 3, 6, 9, or 12 months, starting in September 2025.

Eligibility:
Open to artists working in wood, glass, metal, fiber, clay, or interdisciplinary practices combining craft and photography.
Submission Requirements:
Applicants must submit the following:
● Artist Statement: Describe your creative work, process, techniques, and concepts (max. 1 page).
● Resume: Include education, exhibitions, and relevant experience (max. 3 pages).
● References: Contact information for three professional references.
● Portfolio:
• 10 works created within the last 2 years.
• Provide one wide shot and one detail shot per work (20 images total).
● International Applicants: Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. (visa, green card, or taxpayer identification number).
Selection Process:
Artists are selected based on:
● Quality of creative work.
● Ability to engage with the public.
● Career trajectory.
● Commitment to diversity in the program.
Selected applicants will be notified by email in late May 2025.
Program Benefits:
● 24/7 Studio Access: Artists receive round-the-clock access to a fully equipped studio space, including sinks, wireless internet, and telephones.
● Monthly Stipend: Artists receive a $1,000 monthly stipend to cover living expenses, with an additional small housing/materials allowance.
● Materials and Equipment Access: Ceramic artists have access to two electric kilns, and all residents can utilize HCP’s digital lab and printing credits.
● Cultural and Professional Development: Opportunities for personal and professional growth through discussions with curators, gallery owners, and other art professionals.
● Teaching Opportunities: Artists can take on teaching assignments through HCCC, sharing their expertise and engaging with the public.
● Collaborative Environment: Interaction with other residents, fostering collaboration on projects and sharing of creative ideas.
● Public Engagement: Artists have the chance to open their studios to the public during specific events, allowing for direct interaction with visitors.
● Exhibition Opportunities: At the end of the residency, artists can showcase their work at HCCC’s annual In Residence exhibition.
● Artist Talk: Residents will have the opportunity to give a public artist talk to share their work and process.
● Extended Exposure: Artists will be featured in HCP’s Spot magazine and gain exposure at HCCC events.
