Illustraciència 2023 – International Award on Scientific Illustration

Illustraciència is an illustration contest organized by the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, the Catalan Association of Science Communication in Barcelona, and the Higher Council for Scientific Research.

The Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) (hereinafter MNCN-CSIC) and The Catalan Association of Science Communication (hereinafter ACCC), organize this award known as, “ILLUSTRACIENCIA, International Award on Scientific and Nature Illustration”. This year, as a novelty, ILLUSTRACIENCIA joins the celebration of the Cajal Year, promoted internationally as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest ‘Santiago Ramón y Cajal Research Year 2022’ (Cajal Year).

Participation in this competition implies the automatic acceptance of the following rules. By participating, the author authorizes, not exclusively, the organization to use, reproduce or publicly broadcast their works and his/her name in all activities and publications related to the Award or those in which it is mentioned, without the participant receiving any compensation for their concept. The organization is committed not to commercialize or sell the works independently.

The participants assure and warrant to the organization that they are the soleowners of the copyright in the work submitted to the contest and that they are fully responsible for third party rights in their submitted works and any claims of third parties to image rights.

The CSIC, MNCN-CSIC and the ACCC are exempt from any obligation or compensation to the Award participants if the award would had been cancelled or suspended due to force major or law. In this case, the organization would conveniently inform  the participants. In the broadest interpretation of law, the participants exonerate the ACCC of any liability, penalty, claim, demand or civil commercial, criminal or administrative cause, including compensation of any nature, expenses and costs for any complaint it may receive as a result of a breach by the participants of any of their obligations which arise from these terms (expressly including attorney and court fees).

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

All work teams or individuals over 18 years of age may participate in this award regardless of their country of residence. The winner of the previous edition, the organizing committee and the members of the jury are excluded from this call.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?

Each participant is only able to submit a  single work. In the case of entering as a team, all members should indicate their names. The work must have been created between January 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024.  The subject of the illustrations must be related to science or nature and the technique is free. The participant must fill in the registration form on the website www.Illustraciencia.info/participa.

The measure of the illustration must be A4 (210 x 297mm) 72 DPI in RGB and it should not include watermarks or text (except signatures, numbers or figure letters and symbols). The participation form should include text in Spanish, Catalan or English of (100-150 words) that explains, in addition to the species or element, some curiosity or characteristic shown in the illustration.

On April 18th de 2024, the 40 selected will be published. The notification will be made by email. The 40 selected have to send the illustration adapted to be printed size A2 (420 x 594mm) 300 DPI in CMYK.

CATEGORIES

  • Scientific: proposals that synthesize and visually represent scientific information with clarity, objectivity and rigor. That they have been made with the aim of helping to understand a text, phenomenon or scientific concept, communicate or disseminate content related to any of the areas of scientific production and knowledge. Proposals can represent taxonomic features, complex processes, and relationships between different elements.
  • Naturalistic: proposals that represent nature and its elements in a detailed and faithful way to reality. In which there is harmony in the compositions, both from the point of view of the elements illustrated and from the point of view of the colors used.
  • Cajal Year: the proposals submitted to the Cajal Year category must be related to the anatomy and physiology of the brain or the nervous system in general and/or to scientific content related to recent research in the area of neurosciences.

SELECTION

From among all received proposals, the jury will select a maximum of 40 illustrations to be ingapart t of  Illustraciencia´s exhibition taking into account their scientific accuracy, innovation and information capacity. Among these ones, the jury will select (unanimously or by a majority of votes) the winning proposal, and up to five special mentions to the most outstanding works. The Audience Award will be made through popular vote on  Facebook.

AWARDS

The 11th edition of Illustraciencia will award one illustration from each category. The author of the winning illustration of the 11th edition of Illustraciencia will receive 1000 euros, while the author of the work selected by the audience will receive a diploma. The given Award will be subject to the tax provisions that are applicable.

JURY

The jury will be formed by representatives of the CSIC, MNCN-CSIC and the ACCC, and professional experts belonging to the Illustraciencia advisory committee. From that date, the selected illustrators will receive the diploma via email.

CALENDAR

  • Reception of proposals: 20 February – 31 March 2024 (11:59 p.m. Spanish time).
  • Publication of selected works: 24 April 2024.
  • Online voting for the Public Mention: 24 to 30 April 2024.
  • Announcement of winning works and special mentions: 27 to 30 May 2024.

The organization is allowed to exclude the participants that do not meet the requirements of these rules. Plagiarized works will be disqualified and archived on the web section of disqualified proposals.
